Honrar a los pobres
Jesús dijo que lo veremos en los pobres, en los hambrientos, en los extranjeros, en los prisioneros, en los desafortunados de la sociedad. He pasado gran parte de mi vida en el ministerio con personas de comunidades agrícolas rurales. Abogo por los inmigrantes y los trabajadores inmigrantes en muchos pueblos pequeños. Muchos son pobres, pero tienen lugares donde vivir. La vida tiene sus dificultades, pero hay nobleza en la gente trabajadora que se encuentra en las zonas rurales de Estados Unidos.
Como Redentorista, la mayoría de nuestras comunidades están en ciudades, muchas de ellas muy grandes. Como misionero, paso mucho tiempo visitando y trabajando en comunidades rurales. Cuando vuelvo a mi comunidad en Kansas City, es triste ver tantas personas sin hogar. A menudo camino durante una hora temprano en la mañana. En una mañana normal me encuentro con entre diez y veinte personas sin hogar durmiendo en parques y en las puertas de tiendas. En las comunidades rurales es raro ver personas sin hogar.
Puede que las personas de fe ofrezcan oportunidades para proporcionar alimento, refugio y esperanza, pero hay algo más que deseo que todos consideremos. ¿Podemos respetarlos? ¿Podemos honrarlos?
Doy cuenta que cada pobre tiene su propia historia, sus propios desafíos. Ya sea que hayan sido víctimas de abuso, injusticia o hayan sufrido desastres fuera de su control, o tengan problemas personales que contribuyen a su pobreza, o hayan cometido errores graves en sus vidas, son hijos de Dios. Conocemos las Escrituras y cómo Jesús recibió a los pobres, los enfermos, los ciegos, los leprosos, los marginados y los pecadores. Los trató con dignidad, invitándolos a vivir en la misericordia y el amor de Dios.
Visité un comedor de beneficencia donde a las personas sin hogar se les servían comidas en platos de gres, con cubiertos y vasos. La comida fue servida por estudiantes de secundaria y universitarios. Después de recibir su comida, los “invitados” comieron en mesas cubiertas con manteles. Los estudiantes se acercaron a los invitados para servir té, café, agua o jugo a los “invitados”. Luego los jóvenes llevaron postres a los “invitados”. Después de la comida, los jóvenes lavaron los platos y limpiaron el salón. Cada semana, el comedor social contaba con voluntarios de diferentes colegios de la ciudad. Ese comedor de beneficencia atendía a más de 300 personas sin hogar una vez por semana. El agradecimiento de los invitados ayudó a que los jóvenes que les atendieron reconocieran la dignidad de las personas que están pasando por un momento difícil en la vida.
Ese fue uno de los comedores más impresionantes que jamás haya visitado.

Honor the poor
Jesus said that we will see him in the poor, the hungry, the stranger, the prisoner, the unfortunate of society. I have spent much of my life in ministry with people in rural, agricultural communities. I advocate for migrants and immigrant workers in many small towns. Many are poor, but they have places to live. Life has its difficulties, but there is nobility in the hard-working people found in rural America.
As a Redemptorist, most of our communities are in cities, many very large cities. As a missionary, I spend a lot of time visiting and working in rural communities. When I go home to my community in Kansas City, it is sad to see so many homeless people. I often walk for an hour early in the morning. On a normal morning I will encounter ten to twenty homeless people sleeping in parks and in doorways of shops. In rural communities it is rare to see such homelessness.
There may be opportunities to provide food, shelter and hope offered by people of faith, but there is something more that I wish all of us consider. Can we respect them? Can we honor them?
I know that each poor person has their own story, their own challenges. Whether they have been victims of abuse, injustice or suffer from disasters outside of their control, or they have personal issues that contribute to their poverty, or they have made serious mistakes in their lives, they are children of God. We know the Scriptures and how Jesus received the poor, the sick, the blind, the leper, the outcast and the sinner. He treated them with dignity, inviting them to live in the mercy and love of God.
I visited a soup kitchen where the homeless were served meals on stoneware plates, with silverware and glasses. The meal was served by high school and college students. After receiving their food, the “guests” ate at tables covered in tablecloths. Students went to the guests to serve tea, coffee, water, or juice to the “guests”. After the meal, the young people washed the dishes and cleaned the hall. Each week, the soup kitchen had volunteers from different schools in the city. That soup kitchen served over 300 homeless people once a week. The gratitude of the guests helped the young people who served them recognize the dignity of people who are having a hard time in life.
That was one of the most impressive soup kitchens that I have ever visited.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
