Accompanying is more than observing

Before we opened Casa San Alfonso, we met with the Archbishop of Denver. We needed his blessing to begin our initiative with inner city youth. He asked us what programs we would offer to the young people. We told him that we had no program, but we had a plan. We wanted young people to make our home, their home. We told the youth, “There are beans on the stove and tortillas in the fridge. Our home is your home.” We invited them to walk into our lives, and hoped that they would welcome us into their lives. We told the archbishop that programs for youth would come from our relationship with the young people.

When we left his office, we thought he would not accept our plan. He gave us his blessing, and we opened Casa San Alfonso, to young people in a poor barrio. Soon we recognized that the young people who came to the house were recent immigrants and children of immigrants. We said that for every ten phone calls, nine were in Spanish and the other was a wrong number. Youth walking with us, and our walking with them made Casa San Alfonso a family, not a ministry.

We invited a few men to live with us. They shared in the duties of hospitality while attending school to study a trade, English as a second language, prepare for a GED or enter high school if they still could. While only a few could live in the house, there were many coming to the house for meals, fellowship, study and prayer.

Accompaniment created bonds that continue in the lives of many of the youth of Casa San Alfonso.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
