A "selfie" with Jesus / Un "selfi" con Jesús

A “selfie” with Jesus / Un “selfi” con Jesús

Me sentí incómodo mientras caminaba.

A “selfie” with Jesus

What if we could take a “selfie” with Jesus? What would he look like? We often have images of Jesus from great artists who show us Jesus as they imagine him. Often, he appears with European features, at times with Semitic features, or he may be represented with African, Hispanic or Asian features. No matter what we image we have, we learn in Matthew that Jesus is with us in the hungry, the homeless, the outcast, the prisoner, and the sinner.

When we look at our “selfie” with Jesus, do we recognize him? In the art above, Jesus carries the migrant, but in Matthew 25, Jesus is the migrant. God willing it is us who are carrying Jesus the migrant. He may be dirty, he may not smell good, he may not be pleasant to be around. Can we imagine our “selfie” as one with us carrying Jesus.

We need not be embarrassed about our discomfort around Jesus. It would be odd if we did not feel ill at ease around Jesus the homeless, the outcast, the migrant, and the prisoner. What Jesus calls on us to do is pay attention to those in need. He calls on us to walk with the poor. Our job is not to solve their problems so much as to give them common charity.

Sometimes it is messy, trying to comfort an outcast. Today, I greeted a person who appeared agitated. I hoped that a kind word might encourage him. His response was angry and combative. My attempt at kindness was an afront to his homelessness. I felt uncomfortable as I walked on. My prayer for him at first seemed empty, but then I reminded myself that he was Jesus. He was having a rough day. That thought help me care, even though I could do little for him.

May we meet Jesus in his best of times and in his difficult times.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
