Motivación para el trabajo
Consideremos las motivaciones de las personas que dejan sus países de origen para crear su hogar en otro país. Hace tres días se dio una lista de varias motivaciones. Me referiré a varios de ellos en los próximos días. La mayoría de los migrantes y refugiados tienen una combinación de las motivaciones enumeradas, por lo que en estas reflexiones se combinarán varias motivaciones.
- Por trabajo:
La motivación para trabajar en otro país es más complicada de lo que mucha gente considera. Desde el comienzo de los Estados Unidos, la gente vino a este país de muchas naciones para trabajar. Vinieron a trabajar la tierra, a construir nuestras ciudades, ferrocarriles, presas y carreteras. Procedían de Europa, Asia, África y otras partes de las Américas. Muchos llegaron como inmigrantes. Algunos llegaron sin libertad ni trato humano.
Ahora llegan a Estados Unidos trabajadores altamente técnicos en medicina, ciencia, ingeniería, tecnología y manufactura. Estos tienen relativa facilidad para venir a nuestro país y pueden ser trabajadores temporales o inmigrantes que buscan hacer su hogar en este país. Estos no son los que enfrentan reacciones violentas, ira y manipulación política como con los trabajadores en la agricultura y trabajos menos respetados. Pueden experimentar algunas regulaciones molestas y costos para obtener visas, pero normalmente tienen canales para la inmigración legal.
Gran cantidad de migrantes e inmigrantes ingresan por la desesperación económica en sus países de origen. Algunos vienen a establecerse como inmigrantes, buscando un hogar en los Estados Unidos. Las motivaciones para venir a los Estados Unidos son variadas: peligro de violencia, opresión política, desesperación económica, oportunidad para que los niños reciban educación, unificación y problemas familiares. Motivation for work
Let us consider the motivations of people leaving their countries of origin to create their home in another country. A list of several motivations was given three days ago. I will address several of them over the next few days. Most migrants and refugees have a combination of the listed motivations, so several motivations will be combined in these reflections.
- For work:
The motivation to work in another country is more complicated than what is considered by many people. From the beginning of the United States, people came to this country from many nations to work. They came to work the land, to build our cities, railroads, dams and roads. They came from Europe, Asia, Africa and other parts of the Americas. Many came as immigrants. Some came without freedom and humane treatment.
Today, workers come to America who are highly technical workers in medicine, science, engineering, technology and manufacturing. These have relative ease in coming to our country and they may be temporary workers or immigrants seeking to make their homes in this country. These are not the ones who face backlash, anger and political manipulation as with workers in agriculture and lesser respected work. They may experience some nuisance regulations and costs to attain visas, but ordinarily have channels for legal immigration.
Great numbers of migrants and immigrants enter because of economic desperation in their countries of origin. Some come to establish themselves as immigrants, seeking a home in the United States. The motivations to come into the United States are varied: danger of violence, political oppression, economic desperation, opportunity for children to receive education, family unification, and family problems. Many of these same motives were the force behind European immigration in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but today the migrants come from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South and Central America. In every generation, the great majority of economically motivated migrants work hard and have great appreciation for countries that receive them.
Integration of immigrant workers into communities begins with a welcoming environment. May people of all faiths work together to address issues of migration in all nations.

We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
