Atención Espiritual a Migrantes Inseguros
Había una pequeña comunidad católica en un pueblo sin iglesia católica. Hubo misa dominical celebrada en un centro comunitario. Era 2018, sin aulas, sin catequistas y a casi veinte millas de la iglesia católica más cercana, familias de quince niños querían que sus hijos recibieran la Primera Comunión. A la semana siguiente, pedí a los que querían que sus hijos recibieran la Primera Comunión que se quedaran después de la Misa. Confié en los padres para preparar a sus propios hijos para la Primera Eucaristía. Para la próxima semana, presentaré cómo preparamos a los niños para su Primera Comunión.

Queridos padres y padrinos,
Vivimos en un tiempo extraordinario para los hijos de inmigrantes. Hay desafíos de fe para todos los jóvenes hispanos. Niños hispanos viven en una nación que trata mal a los inmigrantes. Es importante que la Iglesia responda por estos desafíos. Muchos viven con la posibilidad de ser separados de sus padres en cualquier momento por acciones del gobierno. No son solo los niños indocumentados quienes sufren. Los niños ciudadanos de los EE.UU. que tienen uno o ambos padres indocumentados viven con el temor de que puedan ser separados de sus padres en cualquier momento.
Desafortunadamente, la inseguridad de sus vidas no es obvia para muchos agentes de evangelización en las comunidades católicas. Debemos reflejar en los mensajes que reciben los jóvenes. Cuando no prestamos atención a la inseguridad de la vida familiar, los jóvenes pueden reaccionar de manera no saludable. Saber y creer en el gozo del Evangelio es difícil para las personas que reciben poco respeto. Algunos internalizan el sentimiento de ser de segunda clase en la sociedad. Pueden sentirse miembros de segunda clase en la iglesia si no prestamos atención a la injusticia social.
No todos los jóvenes hispanos son indocumentados o viven en tal inestabilidad, pero la situación política pone a muchos en un estado de confusión sobre su herencia de fe. Este programa de preparación para la Primera Eucaristía invita a los padres y padrinos a preparar a sus hijos para la Primera Eucaristía. Es básico en su presentación. Enseña a los niños cómo orar, cómo participar en la misa y cómo confesarse. También presenta la bendición y la herencia de la fe y las tradiciones hispanas.
En este programa, invito a los padres y padrinos a realizar su papel importante en la formación de los niños en la vida de fe. En el bautismo, los padres prometen formar y educar a sus hijos en los caminos de la fe. Sin embargo, no asumen esa responsabilidad solo. La comunidad de la Iglesia se compromete a apoyar a los padres en esa tarea. Que Dios bendiga a los padres y a nuestras comunidades parroquiales en la evangelización de sus hijos.

Spiritual Care for Insecure Migrants
There was a small Catholic community in a town with no Catholic Church. There was Sunday Mass celebrated in a community center. It was 2018, with no classrooms, no catechists and nearly twenty miles to the closest Catholic church, the parents of fifteen children wanted their children to receive their First Communion. The following week, I asked those who wanted their children to receive First Communion to stay after Mass. I trusted the parents to prepare their own children for First Eucharist. For the next week, I will present how we prepared the children for their First Communion.
Formation for First Eucharist for children of immigrants
Dear Parents and Godparents,
We live in an extraordinary time for the children of immigrants. There are challenges of faith for all Hispanic youth. Hispanic children live in a nation that treats the immigrant badly. It is important that the Church accounts for these challenges. Many live with the possibility of being separated from their parents at any time by government actions. It is not just the undocumented children who suffer. U.S. citizen children who have one or both parents undocumented live in fear that they may be separated from their parents at any time.
Unfortunately, the insecurity of their lives is not obvious to many agents of evangelization in Catholic communities. We must reflect on the messages that young Hispanics receive. When we do not pay attention to the insecurity of family life, young people can react in unhealthy ways. Knowing and believing in the joy of the Gospel is difficult for people receiving little respect. Some internalize a feeling of being second-class in society. They may feel as second-class members of the Catholic community if we do not pay attention to social injustice.
Not all Hispanic youth are undocumented or living in such instability, but the political situation puts many in a state of confusion about their heritage of faith. This program of preparation for First Eucharist invites the parents and Godparents to prepare their children for First Eucharist. It is basic in its presentation. It teaches the children how to pray, how to participate in the Mass, and how to go to confession. It also presents the blessing and heritage of Hispanic faith and traditions.
In this program, I invite the parents and Godparents to realize their important role in the formation of children in the life of faith. In Baptism, Parents promise to form and educate their children in the ways of faith. Yet, they do not take on that responsibility alone. The Church community promises to support the parents in that task. May God bless the parents and our parish community in the evangelization of their children.
