Ministerio Migrante
“Tuve hambre y ustedes me alimentaron, tuve sed y me dieron de beber, fui forastero y me recibieron en su casa…” (Mt. 25, 35)
Jesús llamó la atención sobre los marginados de la comunidad judía. Eran las personas rara vez reconocidas en los círculos religiosos de su tiempo. Jesús no dijo: “Yo era un campesino y …”. El campesino es tan invisible y está en la periferia del ministerio de la iglesia como lo estaban los hambrientos, los ciegos, los leprosos y los marginados en el tiempo de Jesús. Incluso cuando se consideraba parte de los trabajadores esenciales durante la pandemia de COVID, el campesino recibió poca atención y protección. La retórica del ambiente político mantuvo a los campesinos aislados, temerosos y vulnerables. La demografía del campesino sufrió mucho por el COVID y a menudo se le negó asistencia y atención médica. Si Jesús habló del campesino, ¿podría haber dicho: “Yo era un campesino y me reconocieron?” o “¿yo era campesino y me protegieron?” o “¿Yo era campesino y me escucharon?”
Tomar conciencia
Hay una frase popular, “¿Qué haría Jesús?” Uso la frase a menudo, cuando enseño y predico, pero cuando considero a las personas en la periferia de la iglesia y la sociedad, hay algo que viene antes de actuar. Antes de que Jesús respondiera a la persona que necesitaba su atención, estaba consciente de la presencia y la necesidad de la persona. Vio más allá de la necesidad obvia, a menudo reconociendo la fuente de su mayor necesidad.
Cuando el padre del niño dijo: “Maestro, te he traído a mi hijo poseído por un espíritu mudo” (Mr. 9:17), Jesús reconoció que no solo era el hijo el que necesitaba curación, sino el padre el que necesitaba fe. Después de interrogar al hombre por su fe, el padre respondió: “Señor, creo, ayuda mi poca fe” (Mc 9, 24) Antes de actuar, Jesús llamó la atención sobre la mayor necesidad.
Para las personas en el ministerio, necesitamos estar más atentos a aquellos a quienes servimos, para que podamos ir más allá de las necesidades obvias de las personas, para responder mejor a Jesús a quien vemos en el campesino.

“I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me….” (Mt. 25: 35)
Jesus called attention to those on the margins of the Jewish community. They were the people seldom recognized in religious circles of his time. Jesus did not say, “I was a campesino and you….” The migrant farmworker (campesino) is just as invisible and on the periphery of church ministry as the hungry, the blind, the leper, and the outcast were in His time. Even while considered part of the essential workers during the COVID pandemic, the campesino received little attention and protection. The rhetoric of the political environment kept campesinos, isolated, fearful and vulnerable. The demographic of the campesino suffered greatly from COVID and was often denied assistance and medical care. If Jesus spoke of the campesino, could he have said, “I was a campesino and you recognized me?” Or “I was a campesino and you protected me.” Or “I was a campesino and you listened to me?”
Become aware
There is a popular phrase, “What would Jesus do?” I use the phrase often, as I teach and preach, but as I consider people on the periphery of church and society, there is something that comes before taking action. Before Jesus ever responded to the person needing his attention, he was aware of the person’s presence and need. He saw beyond the obvious need, often recognizing the source of their greatest need.
When the father of child said, “Teacher, I have brought to you my son possessed by a mute spirit.” (Mk. 9:17) Jesus recognized that it was not only the son who needed healing, but the father who needed faith. After questioning the man for his faith, the father responded, “Lord, I do believe, help my unbelief.” (Mk. 9: 24) Before acting, Jesus called attention to the greater need.
For people in ministry, we need to be more attentive to those whom we serve, so that we may go beyond the obvious needs of people, to better respond to Jesus whom we see in the campesino.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
