Celebrando un Aniversario
Muchas veces he dicho que disfruto más celebrando los aniversarios de matrimonio que las bodas. En la boda, celebramos la esperanza de un buen matrimonio. En un aniversario, celebramos el éxito de un buen matrimonio. Fue el aniversario cuadragésimo de la boda de mis padres cuando celebramos dos aniversarios. Mi madre y su hermana se casaron en el mismo mes, por lo que ambas familias celebraron juntas su cuadragésimo aniversario y, como sacerdote de la familia, celebré la Misa y la renovación de sus votos matrimoniales. Antes de la Misa, el humor irlandés seco de mi papá estaba en exhibición. Antes de ir a la iglesia, papá se paseaba nervioso por la sala. Mi tío Chuck le preguntó: “Emmett, pareces más nervioso que el día de tu boda”. Papá hizo una pausa y dijo: “¿Qué pasa si ella dice que no?”
Por supuesto, tanto mamá como papá, la tía Rose y el tío John renovaron sus votos con todos sus hijos y familias. En la recepción en el patio trasero de John y Rose, mi papá dijo: “Mira a John y Rose. Después de cuarenta años actúan igual, piensan igual, creen igual, votan igual y ahora se parecen igual”. Reflexionó sobre ambos matrimonios considerando los buenos tiempos y los baches en el camino que tuvieron nuestras familias, pero honró el amor que Dios bendijo tan ricamente en ambas familias.
Este año, al celebrar mis cincuenta años como sacerdote, agradezco a todos los que celebrarán este aniversario conmigo. El día de mi ordenación fue un día de esperanza para que un sacerdote recién ordenado se comprometiera con la misión de Cristo en la Iglesia. Los redentoristas dicen que estamos llamados a “evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. Ahora doy gracias a mi congregación por permitirme trabajar con los pobres. Agradezco a todos los migrantes e inmigrantes que me evangelizaron al acogerme en sus vidas.

Celebrating an Anniversary
I have often said that I enjoy celebrating marriage anniversaries more than weddings. At the wedding, we celebrate the hope for a good marriage. At an anniversary, we celebrate the success of a good marriage. It was at the fortieth wedding anniversary of my parents when we celebrated two anniversaries. My mother and her sister married in the same month, so both families celebrated their fortieth anniversary together, and as the priest in the family, I celebrated the Mass and their renewal of marriage vows. Before the Mass, my Dad’s dry Irish wit was on display. Before we went to the church, Dad paced nervously in the living room. My uncle Chuck asked him, “Emmett, you look more nervous than the day of your wedding.” Dad paused and said, “What if she says no?”
Of course, both Mom and Dad, and Aunt Rose and Uncle John renewed their vows with all their children and families. At the reception in the back yard of John and Rose, my Dad said, “Look at John and Rose. After forty years they act alike, think alike, believe alike, vote alike and now even look alike.” He reflected on both marriages considering the good times and the bumps in the road that our families had, but he honored the love that God so richly blessed in both families.
This year, as I celebrate my fifty years as a priest, I thank all who will celebrate this anniversary with me. The day of my ordination was a day of hope for a newly ordained priest to commit himself to the mission of Christ in the Church. Redemptorists say that we are called to “evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” Now I give thanks to my congregation for allowing me to work with the poor. I thank all the migrants and immigrants who evangelized me as they welcomed me into their lives.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
