“Solo tienes el tiempo que Dios te da”
Nuestros seminaristas redentoristas en las décadas de 1950 a 1970 ofrecieron programas de preparación sacramental para las personas que siguieron las cosechas de frutas y verduras que se movían del sur al norte a medida que maduraban las cosechas. En el otoño, después de la última cosecha, los trabajadores regresaron al sur. Los trabajadores viajaban en caravanas y estarían en un mismo lugar durante cuatro a ocho semanas dependiendo de las cosechas. La cosecha de cerezas en The Dalles, OR es una cosecha ideal para ofrecer una misión sacramental. La cosecha de la cereza es de corta duración y depende de la llegada de un gran número de trabajadores. Los trabajadores rara vez trabajan después de las tres de la tarde, y hay luz del día hasta las 9:00 pm. Cuando los trabajadores me contaron las dificultades que tenían para realizar la Primera Comunión para sus hijos, me dispuse a ofrecer preparación sacramental a los niños y adolescentes presentes en los campamentos. Our Redemptorist seminarians in the 1950’s to the 70’s offered sacramental preparation programs for people who followed the fruit and vegetable harvests moving from the South to the North as crops ripened. In the Fall, after the last harvest the workers went back to the South. The workers traveled in caravans and would be in one place for four to eight weeks depending on the harvests. With mechanization for some of the crops and changes in agriculture, there are not so many caravans of seasonal workers visible as in the past.
The cherry harvest in The Dalles, OR is an ideal harvest to offer a sacramental mission. The cherry harvest is of short duration and depends on the influx of a large number of workers. Workers rarely work past three in the afternoon, and there is daylight until 9:00 pm. When workers told me of the difficulties that they had in seeking First Communion for their children, I set about offering sacramental preparation for the children and teenagers present in the camps. I began with three lay volunteers and one seminarian the first summer. From the third to the eleventh year of the cherry harvest missions, my teams had from six to ten volunteers and seminarians.
After two summers offering First Communion programs for migrant children, our mission team went for lunch with Bishop Robert Vasa of the Diocese of Baker. He asked if the people would like the Bishop to offer the First Communion Mass the following year. I said that the people would be delighted. He then asked how many children were in the classes and their ages. I told him that we had over seventy children in the classes and half of them were over 14 years old. He said, “The older children should also be confirmed.” I told him that we only had two weeks to prepare the young people. He said, “You only have the time that God gives you. You prepare them and I’ll confirm them.” I always cherish his message to our team. The sacrament is the work of God, and the best we can do is sufficient. I assure you that in the nine years that I ran the Confirmation program for children of migrant workers in Oregon, the quality of our program improved.
In working with migrants, I will never forget Bishop Vasa’s advice, “You only have the time that God gives you.” This is not just true with migrant farm workers, but has guided me as I recognize special needs of workers in construction, trucking, the travel industry, entertainers, prisoners, and all workers for whom our ordinary parish programs may fail to serve.
