Reflection for Christ the King / Cristo Rey

Reflection for Christ the King / Cristo Rey

The Feast of Christ the King

I love the feast of Christ the King. When we celebrate this feast, I think of the martyrs of Mexico during the Cristiada. We want to shout, “Long live Christ the King.” This feast marks the end of the ecclesial year. Hispanic faith is recognized in devotion as witnessed by celebration of feasts, popular devotions, and attention to Mary as Mother of God. This time of year is marked by our celebrations of the feasts of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Las Posadas and Christmas.  Each year we begin with the Advent celebrations and we end with the great summary of faith, Christ is King.

I love the gospel of this feast, when the Son of God separates the sheep from the goats and declares, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” There is no other scripture that I consider more when I think of missionary life and the priesthood. In my walk with migrants and immigrants, I always think about receiving the stranger. Today, considering the pandemic, we have to take care of the sick. The important thing in this gospel is to see the Christ in the other.

Save your neighbor. Wear your mask. Be careful to avoid COVID and to not pass it on. May God keep you all your loved ones.
