Ver el bien en los demás

«Ustedes vieron bondad en nosotros que no se notaron nosotros y queríamos vivir a nivel de sus expectativas. Y cuando caemos, ustedes no nos abandonaron. Somos quienes somos hoy gracias a la Casa San Alfonso».

Dos hombres reflexionaron sobre su experiencia en nuestra comunidad juvenil redentorista en Casa San Alfonso, Denver (1991-1996). Al recordar sus experiencias con los Redentoristas de la Casa, recordaron momentos especiales de aquellos años. En los buenos y en los malos momentos, nos convertimos en una familia. Sin embargo, aunque recordaban momentos buenos y algunos difíciles, su recuerdo más preciado de la Casa fue reconocer su propia bondad, algo que nadie podía quitarles.

Los problemas que vemos en el mundo actual solo se resolverán cuando reconozcamos el bien en el mundo y en las personas. Dios miró a toda la creación y dijo: “Es buena”. No importa lo que haga gente, si creemos en la Palabra de Dios, tenemos que ver el bien que Dios ve en ellos. El pecado es la respuesta de los que no son malos, sino que realmente están enfermos. Su malestar puede manifestarse en actos de violencia, odio, racismo y mala voluntad, pero las personas no se definen por su enfermedad. Tampoco por sus actos desconsiderados o violentos. Cuando uno llega a conocer su propia bondad, una vida buena se hace posible.

Que Dios bendiga a todas las personas con el don de reconocer a Dios en su interior, porque Dios es bueno.

Seeing good in others

“You saw good in us that we did not see in ourselves, and we wanted to live up to your expectations. Even when we messed up, you never gave up on us. We are who we are because of Casa San Alfonso.”

Two men reflected on their experience of our Redemptorist youth community at Casa San Alfonso in Denver, (1991-1996). As they reminisced about their experiences with the Redemptorists of the Casa, they recalled special moments over those years. In good times and in uncomfortable times, we became a family. Yet, while they recalled good times and some difficult moments, their fondest memory of the Casa was coming to recognize their own goodness and no one could take that away from them.

The problems that we see in our world today will only be resolved when we recognize good in our world and in people. God looked at all of creation and said, “It is good.” No matter what people do, if we believe in the Word of God, we must see the good that God sees in them. Sin is the response of people who are not evil, but they are not well. Their “not wellness” may be seen in acts of violence, hatred, racism, and ill will, but people are not defined by their illness. Nor are they defined by their inconsiderate or hurtful acts. When one comes to know their own goodness, a good life becomes possible.

May God bless all people with the gift of recognizing God within them, because God is good.

Al considerar acoger a un forastero, deberíamos escuchar el saludo de Abraham a los forasteros que pasaban junto a su tienda en la primera lectura de la Misa de hoy:

“Señor mío, si he hallado gracia a tus ojos, te ruego que no pases junto a mí sin detenerte. Haré que traigan un poco de agua para que se laven los pies y descansen a la sombra de estos árboles; traeré pan para que recobren las fuerzas y después continuarán su camino, pues sin duda para eso han pasado junto a su siervo”.

El mundo sería mucho mejor si siguiéramos el ejemplo de Abraham.

When considering welcoming a stranger, we should listen to Abraham’s greeting to the strangers passing by his tent in the first reading of today’s Mass:

“Sir, if I may ask you this favor,
please do not go on past your servant.
Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet,
and then rest yourselves under the tree.
Now that you have come this close to your servant,
let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves;
and afterward you may go on your way.”

The world would be a much better place if we tried Abraham’s way.

When criticism hits a nerve / Cuando la crítica toca la fibra sensible

Cuando la crítica toca la fibra sensible

Cuando el obispo Daniel Flores dijo: “La Iglesia no pedirá documentos. No revisará los registros bautismales. No dejará de alimentar a los hambrientos”, alguien se opuso diciendo: “La Iglesia sí pide registros bautismales. Cuando no los proporcionamos, no celebraron el funeral de mi sobrino. Ni siquiera te permiten recibir una bendición ni tomar pan o vino si no estás bautizado como católico”.

La crítica no se refería al tema que el obispo Flores abordó, pero es una crítica con fundamento. Es hora de que la administración eclesiástica reconozca exactamente lo que esta persona dice. El papa Francisco dijo: “La peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. (Eg. 200) Es bueno que la Iglesia no pida documentos para que la gente reciba comida, alojamiento, asistencia médica, social y legal, pero también debemos eliminar las barreras que impiden a las personas de fe buscar el bautismo, la Eucaristía, una bendición o el funeral de un ser querido.

En la historia del Buen Samaritano, fueron los líderes religiosos quienes no atendieron al viajero atacado por ladrones. Al reconocer nuestro llamado a cuidar al extranjero, al migrante, a las víctimas de ICE, también debemos examinar nuestras propias maneras de excluir a las personas del abrazo de la Iglesia.

La crítica a la declaración del obispo Flores no disminuye en absoluto su enérgica y elocuente defensa de los migrantes, los pobres y los indocumentados. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo, esperamos que los líderes católicos examinen cómo limitamos la recepción de la atención pastoral de quienes buscan la bendición de Dios.

When criticism hits a nerve

When Bishop Daniel Flores said, “The church will not ask for papers. It will not check for baptismal records. It will not stop feeding the hungry,” someone took exception saying: “The church does ask for baptismal records. When we didn’t provide any, they wouldn’t hold my nephew’s funeral. They won’ even let you get a blessing or take bread/wine if you’re not baptized Catholic.”

The criticism was not on the issue that Bishop Flores addressed, but is a criticism with merit. It is time for people within church administration to recognize exactly what this person is saying. Pope Francis said, “the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” It is good that the Church does not seek papers for people to receive food, shelter, medical, social and legal assistance, but we also need to rid ourselves of putting up barriers to people of faith seeking Baptism, Eucharist, a blessing, or the funeral of a loved one.

In the story of the Good Samaritan, it was religious leaders who failed to care for the traveler attacked by robbers. As we recognize our call to care for the stranger, the migrant, the victims of ICE, we also need to examine our own ways of excluding people from the embrace of the Church.

The criticism of Bishop Flores statement in no way diminishes his forcefull and eloquent defense of migrants, the poor and the undocumented. Yet, hopefully as time passes, may Catholic leaders examine ways that we place limits on reception of pastoral care on people seeking God’s blessing.

“La Iglesia no pedirá papeles”.

El domingo, el obispo Daniel Flores de la diócesis de Brownsville, habló con fuerza y elocuencia en defensa de los migrantes, los pobres y los indocumentados. Al alimentar, ofrecer albergue y acoger a los migrantes, afirmó: “La Iglesia no pedirá papeles. No revisará los registros bautismales. No dejará de alimentar a los hambrientos porque alguien en Washington piense que la caridad necesita un permiso”. Gracias, obispo Flores.

Es alentador escuchar a los obispos alzar la voz y pedir a nuestra Iglesia que responda a las redadas y acciones del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas de Estados Unidos (ICE). Las personas deberían poder acercarse a las iglesias y agencias de la Iglesia sin temor. Al atender a personas que viven con miedo, no se trata de política. Se trata de caridad. Se trata de ser el “buen samaritano”. El mensaje se repite en todo el país, ya que los obispos llaman a todas las personas a reconocer que nos encontramos en un momento de intensa negación de los derechos humanos y la dignidad humana en Estados Unidos.

Los agentes de inmigración ahora entran en iglesias, sinagogas y mezquitas, no solo durante los servicios religiosos, sino también cuando las comunidades religiosas alimentan y ofrecen servicios médicos y sociales a los pobres, para verificar la documentación. Estas tácticas no son política. No son justicia. Son simplemente actos de crueldad e inhumanidad.

“The Church will not ask for papers.”

On Sunday, Bishop Daniel Flores, of Brownsville, TX., spoke forcefully and eloquently in defense of migrants, the poor and the undocumented. In feeding, offering shelter and welcoming migrants he stated: “The church will not ask for papers. It will not check for baptismal records. It will not stop feeding the hungry because someone in Washington thinks charity needs a permission slip.” Thank you, Bishop Flores.

It is encouraging to hear from Bishops speaking out and calling on our Church to respond to the raids and actions of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). People should be able to approach churches and agencies of the Church without fear. When caring for people living in fear, it is not about politics. It is about charity. It is to be the ‘Good Samaritan’. The message is being repeated across the country as bishops are calling all people to recognize that we are in a moment of intense denial of human rights and human dignity within the United States.

Immigration agents now enter churches, synagogues and mosques, not only during worship services but as the religious communities feed and offer medical and social services for the poor, to check on “papers”. Such tactics are not politics. They are not ‘justice’. They are simply acts of cruelty and inhumanity.

Pastoral care and sacraments for the poor

The third recommendation concerning pastoral care for immigrants living in fear should be considered not only for those caught up in fear on account of today’s crisis, but recognizing the need for pastoral care of all people on the margins of the Church. Here are statements from two bishops and Pope Francis:

From the “Decree Dispensing from the Obligation to Attend Sunday Mass,” (Diocese of San Bernardino, July 8, 2025)

Pastoral Care and Assurance: Pastors, parochial vicars, and other pastoral ministers are to provide compassionate support to those affected by this fear, ensuring that they feel welcomed and safe in communities. Parishes are encouraged to explore alternative means of catechesis and sacramental preparation for those unable to attend regularly.

From the Joy of the Gospel, 200: Pope Francis, November, 2013

I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith. Our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care.

From Bishop John Steinbock, “Proclaiming the Kingdom of God”, Fresno Diocesan Clergy Convocation, January 2010:

Jesus was found mostly amongst the poor, the sick, the lame, the suffering, the oppressed, the marginalized, the leper, tax collectors, those looked down upon and despised by the upper class. It was to these especially that He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, and manifested God’s love. Who are these people in our present society, and those within our parishes? They are the poor, the homeless families, the farm workers and their families, the migrant, the undocumented, the sick, the imprisoned. The vast majority of these people rarely come to Mass.

These reflections are speaking of those that live on the margin of the Church, living in cars, in labor camps, in isolated clusters of homes, and those that work on the farms and dairies found throughout our diocese, so often without the luxury of transportation and of living a normal scheduled life. We should be pastoral, especially to those that our Lord loves in a special way. It is just such as these that the Kingdom of God is comprised.

Atención pastoral y sacramentos para los pobres

La tercera recomendación sobre la atención pastoral para los migrantes que viven con miedo debe considerarse no solamente para quienes están atrapados en el temor debido a la crisis hoy, sino también para reconocer la necesidad de atención pastoral para todas las personas marginadas de la Iglesia. A continuación, se presentan las declaraciones de dos obispos y del Papa Francisco.

3. Atencion y acompanamiento pastoral: Los parrocos, vicarios parroquiales y otros ministros pastorales deben brindar apoyo compasivo a los afectados por este temor, asegurandose de que se sientan bien recibidos y seguros en nuestras comunidades. Hago un llamado a las parroquias a que exploren alternativas de catequesis y preparacion sacramental para quienes no puedan asistir segun el programa establecido.

quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual. La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe. La opción preferencial por los pobres debe traducirse principalmente en una atención religiosa privilegiada y prioritaria.

Jesús se encontraba principalmente entre los pobres, los enfermos, los cojos, los afligidos, los oprimidos, los marginados, los leprosos, los cobradores de   impuestos y los despreciados por la alta sociedad. A ellos especialmente Jesús les proclamaba el Reino y el amor de Dios. ¿Quiénes son estas personas en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras parroquias? Son los pobres, las familias desamparadas, los trabajadores agrícolas y sus familias, los migrantes, los indocumentados, los enfermos, los prisioneros. La gran mayoría de estas personas solo asisten a misa de vez en cuando.

Estas reflexiones hablan de los que viven en el margen de la Iglesia, en carros, en campos de trabajo, en grupos aislados de casas, y en granjas y lecherías a través de la diócesis sin el lujo del transporte y sin estabilidad en sus vidas. Debemos ayudar pastoralmente, especialmente a aquellos que Nuestro Señor ama de una manera especial. Para ellos es el Reino de Dios.

Al considerar la obligación de asistir a la Misa dominical, debemos recordar que la intención original del precepto de la Iglesia sobre asistir a la Misa dominical surge del tercer mandamiento: «Acuérdate del día del sábado para santificarlo» (Éxodo 20:8). Si bien la práctica de reunirse para el culto dominical se iniciado al cristianismo primitivo, la celebración de la Misa como forma común de culto dominical comenzó en el siglo IV y se codificó en el Derecho Canónico en 1917.

Si bien era la forma usual en que las comunidades eclesiales santificaban el Domingo del Señor, la obligación reconocía la necesidad de una comprensión generosa ante las situaciones en las que no era posible asistir a la Misa dominical. La segunda recomendación de la dispensa reconocida en la declaración de la Diócesis de San Bernardino ha sido practicada por muchos que no han podido asistir a las Misas dominicales.

Fomento de practlcas espirituales alternativas: Se exhorta a quienes quedan dispensados de asistir a la santa Misa a que mantengan su comunion espiritual con Cristo y su Iglesia ofreciendo su oracion personal, leyendo las Sagradas Escrituras o participando en devociones como el Santo Rosario o la Coronilla de la Divlna Misericordia. Siempre que sea posible, los fieles pueden tambien participar en misas televisadas o en linea ofrecidas por la diocesis u otras fuentes catolicas reconocidas.

El hijo de un lechero recordó: “Había veces cuando nuestras vacas estaba pariendo un domingo y papá me pedía que la ayudara en el establo mientras mamá preparaba a mis hermanas y hermanos para la Misa. Si no podíamos ir a Misa, después de que naciera el ternero, papá decía: ‘Hijo, trae tu rosario’. Cuando paría una vaca un domingo, ofrecíamos una alternativa para nuestro culto dominical”.

Un domingo, después de Misa, fui a ofrecer la unción de los enfermos a una mujer que recibía cuidado paliativo en su casa. Casi toda su familia estaba presente mientras ella se estaba muriendo. No pudo comulgar y la ungí. Estando en casa, le dije a la familia que todos debían reconocer este servicio de oración como un cumplimiento de su obligación dominical. Un par de horas después, falleció. Uno de los nietos me agradeció después la dispensa de la misa, y le dije que no era una dispensa mía, sino un reconocimiento de que en ese momento la familia necesitaba estar con su abuela.

Estas prácticas alternativas deberían fomentarse para todas las personas que no pueden asistir a la misa dominical. Dios está con nosotros en todo momento.

Encouragement of Alternative Practices

As we consider the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, we need to remember that the original intent of the precept of the Church about attending Sunday Mass arises from the third commandment, “Remember the Sabbath, keep it holy.” (Ex. 20:8) While the practice of gathering for worship on Sundays goes back to early Christianity, the celebration of Mass as the common way of worship for Sundays began in the fourth century and was codified in Canon Law in 1917.

Even while it was the normal way for church communities to make the Lord’s Day holy, the obligation recognized the need for a generous understanding of situations when it was not possible to attend Sunday Mass. The second recommendation of the dispensation acknowledged in the statement of the Diocese of San Bernardino has been practiced by many who have been unable to attend Sunday Masses.

  1. Encouragement of Alternative Spiritual Practices: Those dispensed from attending Mass are encouraged to maintain their spiritual communion with Christ and His Church through acts of personal prayer, reading of Sacred Scripture, or participation in devotions such as the Rosary or the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Where possible, the faithful may also participate in televised or online Masses offered by the diocese or other reputable Catholic sources.

A dairyman’s son recalled: “There were times when one of our cows was giving birth on a Sunday and Dad had me help him in the barn while Mom got my sisters and brothers ready for Mass. If we were unable to go to Mass, after the calf was born, Dad would say: ‘Son, get your rosary.’ When birthing a cow of a Sunday, we offered an alternative for our Sunday worship.”

On a Sunday, after Mass, I went to offer communion to a woman on hospice care in her home. Most of her family was present as she was dying. She was unable to receive communion and I anointed her. While in the home, I told the family that all of them should recognize this prayer service as fulfilling their Sunday obligation. A couple hours later she passed. One of the grandchildren later thanked me for the dispensation from Mass, and I told her that it was not a dispensation from me personally, but recognition that at that moment the family needed to be with their grandmother.

Such alternative practices should be encouraged for all people who are unable to attend Sunday Mass. God is with us at all times.

El domingo, la publicación del Padre Migrante incluyó una de varias declaraciones de obispos sobre el temor a las recientes actividades de las autoridades migratorias del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE). Durante los próximos cuatro días, reflexionaré sobre las medidas tomadas en la declaración de la diócesis de San Bernardino.

  1. Dispensa de la obligacion de asistir a la santa Misa: Todos los fieles de la Diocesis de San Bernardino que, debido a un temor real a las actividades de las autoridades migratorias, no puedan asistir a la santa Misa los domingos o fiestas de precepto, quedan dispensados de esta obligacion, segun dispone el Canon 1247, hasta que se revoque o enmiende este decreto.

Espero que esta dispensa promueva una reflexión más profunda sobre la obligación. Siempre me ha dolido reflexionar sobre la asistencia a Misa como una obligación. Crecí con padres que nunca faltaban a Misa los domingos. Solo faltaban a la Misa dominical si estaban gravemente enfermos o si alguna condición extraordinaria les impedía asistir a Misa. Los domingos eran días especiales. Era un día para ir a misa por la mañana y hacer picnics familiares o visitar a nuestros abuelos.

Recientemente, experimentamos una dispensa de la obligación dominical durante más de un año debido a la COVID-19, y ahora reconocemos el temor que las acciones injustas de nuestro gobierno han causado a los inmigrantes y sus familias, la mayoría de los cuales están aquí legalmente o son ciudadanos estadounidenses. Los obispos animan a los católicos a moderar su comprensión de la obligación, reconociendo que Dios no nos da una obligación que no podamos cumplir. No es pecado si un huracán, una inundación, una crisis natural o una enfermedad nos impide asistir a misa.

En realidad, la dispensa en sí misma nos ayuda a desarrollar una comprensión sana de por qué celebramos la misa los domingos. Es un día para reunirnos con nuestros hermanos en la fe, celebrar nuestra fe y reconocer a Jesús en la comunidad, el Cuerpo de Cristo.

More about a Dispensation

On Sunday, the Padre Migrante post included one of several statements by bishops concerning the fear of recent actions taken by Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE). For the next four days, I will reflect on the actions taken in the diocese of San Bernardino declaration.

  1. Dispensation from the Obligation to Attend Mass: All members of the faithful in the Diocese of San Bernardino who, due to genuine fear of immigration enforcement actions, are unable to attend Sunday Mass or Masses on holy days of obligation are dispensed from this obligation, as provided for in Canon 1247, until such time as this decree is revoked or amended.

Hopefully, this dispensation will introduce a deeper reflection on obligation. It has always pained me to reflect on attending Mass as an obligation. I grew up with parents who never missed Mass on Sunday. They would only miss Sunday Mass if they were seriously ill, or an extraordinary condition made attendance at Mass impossible. Sundays were special days. It was a day to go to Mass in the morning and to have family picnics or visits at our grandparent´s homes.

Recently we experienced dispensation from the Sunday Obligation for over a year because of COVID, and now a recognition of the fear caused by the unjust actions of our government to immigrants and their family, most of whom are here legally or are U.S. citizens. Bishops are encouraging Catholics to moderate their understanding of obligation to recognize that God does not give us an obligation that one cannot fulfill. It is not a sin if a hurricane, blizzard, flood, natural crisis or illness prevents one from attending Mass.

In reality, the dispensation itself is an aid to developing a healthy understanding of why we celebrate Mass on Sundays. It is a day to come together with fellow believers, celebrate our faith and to recognize Jesus in our community, the Body of Christ.

Gracias, Diócesis de San Bernardino. El “Decreto que Dispensa de la Obligación de Asistir a la Misa Dominical” es una declaración oportuna y profunda que reconoce la inmensa carga del miedo que niega a los migrantes la libertad de practicar la fe y la religión. Que todas las personas reconozcan el acompañamiento de Dios en la vida de los pobres, especialmente cuando no pueden practicar la fe abiertamente.

Varias diócesis han abordado el temor a las autoridades migratorias, causado por las redadas y acciones del Servicio de Inmigración y Control Aduanas de Estados Unidos (ICE), que disuaden a las personas de asistir a misa y a prácticas religiosas. El decreto de dispensa de la Diócesis de San Bernardino declaró:

  • Dispensa de la obligación de asistir a la santa Misa: Todos los fieles de la Diócesis de San Bernardino que, debido a un temor real a las actividades de las autoridades migratorias, no puedan asistir a la santa Misa los domingos o fiestas de precepto, quedan dispensados de esta obligación, según dispone el Canon 1247, hasta que se revoque o enmiende este decreto.
  • Fomento de practicas espirituales alternativas: Se exhorta a quienes quedan dispensados de asistir a la santa Misa a que mantengan su comunión espiritual con Cristo y su Iglesia ofreciendo su oración personal, leyendo las Sagradas Escrituras o participando en devociones como el Santo Rosario o la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia.   • Atención y acompañamiento pastoral: Los párrocos, vicarios parroquiales y otros ministros pastorales deben brindar apoyo compasivo a los afectados por este temor, asegurándose de que se sientan bien recibidos y seguros en nuestras comunidades. Hago un llamado a las parroquias a que exploren alternativas de catequesis y preparación sacramental para quienes no puedan asistir según el programa establecido.
  • Duración y ámbito de aplicación: Esta dispensa favorece a todos los fieles afectados dentro de los limites territoriales de la Diócesis de San Bernardino y queda en vigor hasta nuevo aviso o hasta que las circunstancias que hacen necesario este decreto se resuelvan lo suficiente.

Aunque el titular trata sobre la enseñanza sobre la “Obligación Dominical”, me complace ver la recomendación de explorar “alternativas de catequesis y preparacion sacramental para quienes no puedan asistir segun el programa establecido.” Se reconoce la necesidad de “alternativas” en la educación religiosa y la preparación sacramental. Necesitamos estas alternativas para un público mucho más amplio, pero quizás a medida que las personas reconozcan alternativas para quienes experimentan miedo que les impide participar en la Iglesia. Que también estemos abiertos a reconocer a todas las personas que necesitan comprensión y alternativas.

Gracias a todas las diócesis que reconocen las necesidades especiales de las personas en la periferia de la sociedad y de la Iglesia.

Thank you, Diocese of San Bernardino. The “Decree Dispensing from the Obligation to Attend Sunday Mass,” is a timely and profound statement that recognizes the immense burden of fear that denies migrants freedom of the practice of faith and religion. May all people recognize God’s accompaniment in the lives of the poor especially when the poor are unable to practice the faith openly.

There are a number of dioceses that have addressed the fear of immigration enforcement, caused by the raids and actions of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that deter people from attending Mass and religious practices. The decree of dispensation by the Diocese of San Bernardino declared:

  • Dispensation from the Obligation to Attend Mass: All members of the faithful in the Diocese of San Bernardino who, due to genuine fear of immigration enforcement actions, are unable to attend Sunday Mass or Masses on holy days of obligation are dispensed from this obligation, as provided for in Canon 1247, until such time as this decree is revoked or amended.

  • Duration and Scope: This dispensation applies to all affected faithful within the territorial boundaries of the Diocese of San Bernardino and remains in effect until further notice or until such time as the circumstances necessitating this decree are sufficiently resolved.

While the headline is about the teaching on “Sunday Obligation”, I am happy to see the recommendation “to explore alternative means of catechesis and sacramental preparation for those unable to attend regularly.” Recognition of the need for “alternatives” in religious education and sacramental preparation. We need these alternatives for a much wider audience, but perhaps as people recognize alternatives for those who experience fear that keeps them away from Church participation. May we also be open to recognizing all people who need understanding and alternatives.

La Ley y Cristo

En el evangelio de este domingo, Lc 10,25-37, para poner a prueba a Jesús, un estudioso de la ley preguntó: “Maestro, ¿qué debo hacer para conseguir la vida eterna?” Jesús redirigió la pregunta al estudioso, pidiendo sobre la enseñanza de la ley. Y el estudioso respondió: “Amarás al Señor tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma, con todas tus fuerzas y con todo tu ser, y a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. Jesús le dijo: “Has contestado bien; si haces eso, vivirás”.

En este pasaje, Jesús llama a hacer el bien en lugar de evitar el pecado. No era un mensaje nuevo. El estudioso proporcionó la esencia de la ley judía. Esta exige acciones positivas para el bien, especialmente frente al mal, como lo demuestra el ejemplo del Buen Samaritano. Si bien las escrituras judías exigían una ley de amor, la mayor parte del mundo considera que la ley impone límites a los abusos. El derecho romano y griego creó leyes para proteger la libertad de las personas de los abusos de los gobiernos y líderes. El derecho inglés y germánico creó leyes para proteger al estado y a la sociedad de los abusos a la libertad. Estas tradiciones veían la ley como algo que imponía límites. Las Escrituras consideraban la ley del amor como un medio para superar la debilidad y el pecado.

La ley del amor da vida. Si aprendemos a amar a Dios y al prójimo, nunca tendremos que preocuparnos por las leyes de los límites.

The Law and Christ

In this Sunday’s gospel, Lk 10:25-37, to test Jesus, a scholar of the law asked, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus redirected the question to the scholar, inquiring about the teaching of the law.  And the scholar said, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

In this passage, Jesus calls for doing good rather than avoiding sin. It was not a new message. The scholar provided the heart of Jewish law. It calls for positive action for good, especially when confronted with evil, as the example of the Good Samaritan demonstrates. While Jewish scripture called for a law of love, most of the world considers law as providing limits to abuses. Roman and Greek law created laws to protect the freedom of people from the abuses of governments and leaders. English and Germanic law created laws to protect the state and society from abuses of freedom. These traditions viewed law as imposing limits. Scripture viewed the law of love as a means of overcoming weakness and sin.

The law of love gives life. If we learn to love God and our neighbor, we would never have to worry about the laws of limits.

Emigrar es diferente a mudarse dentro del propio país. No es como viajar por trabajo, una misión, estudios o aventura. La decisión de emigrar es permanente. Si uno decide regresar a casa, puede ser costoso e incluso peligroso. Significa dejar a la familia y muchas de las cosas que sustentan la vida.

Incluso con una buena preparación, existe incertidumbre e impotencia ante el propio destino. Las dificultades pueden incluir el idioma, la cultura, la etnia, la libertad religiosa y lo inesperado. Uno puede enfrentar sospechas, aislamiento, soledad y desafíos nunca antes experimentados. A menudo, la decisión sobre la permanencia de una mudanza se pospone. La permanencia de una mudanza a otro país no suele depender únicamente de la persona que desea emigrar. Factores como la educación, la riqueza, la experiencia y las oportunidades afectan la permanencia de la decisión de quedarse o irse del país.

Emigrar es la decisión de vivir en una realidad inestable. La recepción del migrante depende de las autoridades del país de acogida.

The decision to emigrate – choosing uncertainty, hardship and insecurity,

Emigration is different from moving within one’s own country. It’s not like traveling for work, a mission, education, or adventure. The decision to emigrate is permanent. If one decides to go back home, it could be expensive and even dangerous. It means leaving one’s family and many of the things that support one’s life.

Even if one prepares well, there is uncertainty and powerlessness over one’s destiny. Hardships can include language, culture, ethnicity, religious freedom, and the unexpected. One may face suspicion, isolation, loneliness and challenges not experienced before. Often the decision about permanence of a move is deferred. Permanence of a move to another nations is often not solely in the hands of the person desiring to emigrate. Factors of education, wealth, experience and opportunity affect the permanence of one’s decision to stay or leave one’s country.

Emigration is a decision to live in an unstable reality. The migrant’s reception depends on the authorities of the host nation.
