Iniciativa en Pastoral Migrante 2.0

Un director de una iniciativa diocesana de pastoral migrante habla de su proyecto en términos de programa digital, “Pastoral Migrante 2.0”. Me gusta su idea. Necesitamos considerar de nuevo el ministerio migrante después de COVID y las realidades de la inmigración hoy. Necesitamos volver a nuestra metodología de VER, JUZGAR y ACTUAR.

Los cambios en las prácticas agrícolas, la inestabilidad de la inmigración, el uso de programas H-2A y la participación de trabajadores inmigrantes en otros trabajos rurales, especialmente en construcción, paisajismo, turismo y atención médica desafían las prácticas tradicionales del ministerio de trabajadores de agricultura. También es necesario prestar atención a las relaciones de los trabajadores y sus empleadores.

Oren por los líderes y voluntarios en el ministerio migrante. Y oren especialmente por todos los trabajadores del campo.

Initiative in Migrant Ministry 2.0

A director of a diocesan initiative in migrant ministry speaks of his project in computer program terms, “Migrant Ministry 2.0”. I like his notion. We need to rethink migrant ministry after COVID and the realities of immigration today. We need to return to our methodology of VER, JUZGAR and ACTUAR.

The changes in agricultural practices, immigration instability, the use of H-2A programs, and the participation of immigrant workers in other rural jobs, especially in construction, landscaping, tourism and health care challenges traditional practices of migrant agricultural worker ministry. There also needs to be attention given to relationships of workers and their employers.

Pray for leaders and volunteers in migrant ministry. And pray especially for all workers in our fields.

No ofende a los pobres

En el juicio final, Jesús dijo que seremos juzgados por el trato que demos a las personas de la periferia: los hambrientos, los sedientos, los desnudos, los extranjeros, etc. ¿Qué tan bien cuidamos a los pobres? El Papa Francisco llama la atención sobre la “falta de cuidado espiritual”. (EG. 200) Ningún líder religioso quiere admitir que niega el cuidado espiritual de los pobres. Las Caridades Católicas están presentes en todas las diócesis. Muchas parroquias administran bancos de comida, comedores, ministerios de San Vicente de Paúl y más.

Tenemos cuidado de respetar la fe de todas las personas a las que servimos. El Papa Benedicto dijo en la Conferencia de Obispos de América Latina en 2007: “La Iglesia no se dedica al proselitismo. En cambio, crece por ‘atracción'”. Si tenemos cuidado de no ofender a los pobres al imponerles nuestra fe, ¿estamos negando el cuidado espiritual y los sacramentos a los pobres?

No es fácil abordarlo llamando la atención sobre el “cuidado espiritual” de los pobres mientras se guarda de ser acusado de proselitismo. En La Fe del Migrante, honré la fe que veo en la vida de los campesinos migrantes y escribo sobre las buenas prácticas adoptadas para ofrecer los sacramentos a aquellos que a menudo se olvidan en los programas ordinarios de las parroquias. Como ofrecí historias de algunas buenas prácticas, no hay una sola manera en que podamos comenzar a ofrecer atención espiritual a los pobres. Comienza caminando con los pobres.

Sin juzgar a los que están en la periferia de los programas de nuestra iglesia, necesitamos ver el mundo a través de los ojos de los que están en los márgenes de la Iglesia. Es importante que no ofendamos a los pobres, pero el respeto a los pobres reconoce la fe de los pobres. Do not offend the poor

At the last judgment, Jesus said that we will be judged by our treatment of people on the periphery: the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger, etc. How well do we care for the poor? Pope Francis calls attention to the “lack of spiritual care”.(EG. 200) No religious leader wants to admit denying spiritual care for the poor. Catholic Charities are present in every diocese. Many parishes run food banks, soup kitchens, St. Vincent de Paul ministries, and more.

We are careful to respect the faiths of all the people whom we serve. Pope Benedict said at the Conference of the Bishops of Latin America in 2007: “The Church does not engage in proselytism. Instead, she grows by ‘attraction’.” As we are careful not to offend the poor by pushing our faith on them, are we denying spiritual care and the sacraments to the poor?

It is not easy to address calling attention to the “spiritual care” for the poor while guarding against being charged with proselytism. In Migrant Faith, I honored the faith that I see in the lives of migrant farmworkers, and write about good practices adopted to offer the sacraments to those who are often forgotten in ordinary programs of parishes. As I offered stories of some good practices, there is not one solitary way that we may begin offering spiritual care for the poor. It begins with walking with the poor.

Without judging those on the periphery of our church programs, we need to see the world through the eyes of those who are on the fringes of the Church. It is important that we do not offend the poor, but respect for the poor recognizes the faith of the poor. Let us pay attention to practices in our parish ministries that create obstacles for the homeless, the ashamed, the lonely, the abused, the undocumented and the migrant worker.

Feliz Día de San Patricio

Feliz Día de San Patricio a todos mis familiares y amigos irlandeses e irlandeses-estadounidenses. No es solo un gran día para vestirse de verde, sino un día para recordar la fe que se nos transmitió a tantos de nosotros. Siempre celebramos el San Patricio en nuestra casa y en nuestra escuela. En el seminario era un día de fiesta sin clases y se jugaba el clásico baloncesto de los irlandeses contra el mundo. Fue un día en que se suspendió por un día el ayuno y la abstinencia de la Cuaresma. Para nosotros fue un día de orgullo nacional, y si bien recordamos nuestro catolicismo, no fue tanto una fiesta religiosa como una celebración de nuestra herencia.

Como trabajo con migrantes e inmigrantes de América Central y del Sur, es importante celebrar los días festivos de los países y culturas con los que trabajo. La fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe tiene un papel importante en el ministerio hispano, pero hay muchas otras fiestas que celebran ciertas comunidades. Algunas de las fiestas son nacionales y otras son locales o celebradas por grupos indígenas particulares.

En cada celebración, honramos a las personas que han venido de todas partes del mundo. Que nuestras celebraciones de fiestas patronales de naciones y grupos nunca pierdan el carácter religioso de recordarnos nuestra herencia católica.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all my Irish and Irish-American family members and friends. It is not only a great day to be wearing the green, but a day to remember the faith passed on to so many of us. We always celebrated St. Patrick in our home and in our school. In the seminary, it was a holiday with no classes and there was the classic basketball game of the Irish against the world. It was a day when the fast and abstinence of Lent was suspended for a day. For us it was a day of national pride, and while we remembered our Catholicism, it was not so much a religious feast as a celebration of our heritage.

As I work with migrants and immigrants from Central and South America, it is important to celebrate the feast days of the countries and cultures with whom I work. The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe plays a significant role in Hispanic ministry, but there are many other feasts that certain communities celebrate. Some of the feasts are national, and others are local or celebrated by particular indigenous groups.

In each celebration, we honor the people who have come here from all over the world. May our celebrations of patronal feasts of nations and group never lose the religious character of reminding us of our Catholic heritage.

God is good  / Dios es bueno

Dios es bueno

A veces nosotros católicos son demasiados serio. He escrito algunos blogs que son demasiado pesados. Tenemos que recordar que Dios es bueno. No está bien vivir desilusionados. Jesús dijo, “Dios no envió al Hijo para condenar el mundo, sino para que se salve el mundo gracias a él.” (Juan 3:17) Necesitamos animar uno al otro con la Buena Nueva.

Anoche tuvimos un grupo de discusión de Cuaresma con doce feligreses. A veces veíamos las cosas de manera diferente de uno a otro. Eventualmente, todos podríamos reconocer la bondad y la misericordia de Dios. Teníamos diferentes formas de expresar nuestra creencia, pero con alegría, unimos con confianza que “Dios es bueno”.

Hay problemas en el mundo. Hay problemas en nuestro país. Hay problemas en nuestras familias y en nuestra comunidad. En lugar de centrarnos en las pruebas y tribulaciones, confiamos que Dios es bueno. Por su misericordia para con nosotros, podemos ser misericordiosos. Porque él nos ama, podemos amar. Es mucho mejor cuando celebramos lo bueno en nosotros, porque esa bondad viene de Dios.

God is good

Sometimes we Catholics are too serious. I have written some blogs that are too heavy. We have to remember that God is good. It is not good to live in disillusionment. Jesus said, “God did not send his Son to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:17) We need to encourage each other with the Good News.

Last night we had a Lenten discussion group with twelve parishioners. Sometimes we saw things differently from one another. Eventually, we would all be able to recognize the goodness and mercy of God. We had different ways of expressing our belief, but with joy, we confidently agreed that “God is good.”

There are problems in the world. There are problems in our country. There are problems in our families and in our community. Instead of focusing on our trials and tribulations, we trust that God is good. Because of his mercy towards us, we can be merciful. Because he loves us, we can love. It’s much better when we celebrate the good in us, because that goodness comes from God.

El Papa Francisco llama la atención sobre la “falta de atención espiritual” (EG. 200) que experimentan los pobres dentro de nuestra Iglesia. Continúa diciendo: “Los pobres tienen una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe”.

Poco antes de morir, el obispo John Steinbock pidió a sus sacerdotes que cuidaran de aquellos a quienes Jesús amaba. Él dijo,

“Jesús se encontraba principalmente entre los pobres, los enfermos, los cojos, los afligidos, los oprimidos, los marginados, los leprosos, los cobradores de   impuestos y los despreciados por la alta sociedad. A ellos especialmente Jesús les proclamaba el Reino y el amor de Dios. ¿Quiénes son estas personas en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras parroquias? Son los pobres, las familias desamparadas, los trabajadores agrícolas y sus familias, los migrantes, los indocumentados, los enfermos, los prisioneros. La gran mayoría de estas personas solo asisten a misa de vez en cuando.

Estas reflexiones hablan de los que viven en el margen de la Iglesia, en carros, en campos de trabajo, en grupos aislados de casas, y en granjas y lecherías a través de la diócesis sin el lujo del transporte y sin estabilidad en sus vidas. Debemos ayudar pastoralmente, especialmente a aquellos que Nuestro Señor ama de una manera especial. Para ellos es el Reino de Dios.”

Estas reflexiones del Papa Francisco y el obispo Steinbock resuenan con mi experiencia en el ministerio. Los marginados de la Iglesia, especialmente los pobres, experimentan muchas penurias, pero lo más chocante es la falta de atención espiritual que reciben en nuestras iglesias. Jesús nunca le dio la espalda a alguien que experimentó rechazo o dolor en su vida. Su respuesta sorprendió constantemente a las personas que eran líderes en la práctica de la fe, pero que no mostraban amor a los marginados. No dejó de ofrecer vista a los ciegos, perdón al pecador, comida a los hambrientos, consuelo a los familiares afligidos, respeto a las mujeres maltratadas, acogida de los niños pequeños y acogida a las personas ajenas a la fe judía.

Con demasiada frecuencia en la iglesia, los pobres experimentan preguntas sobre su fe, su preparación e incluso su dignidad antes de que prestemos atención a sus necesidades espirituales. Parecemos guardias a las puertas de la Iglesia, más que servidores del pueblo de Dios. No siempre es fácil amar a los pobres. Algunos pueden ser agresivos, ruidosos, excéntricos e incómodos. Algunos tienen problemas que no podemos resolver. Sin embargo, podemos ofrecer la gracia del sacramento, los signos del amor de Jesús por todos.

Nuestra primera respuesta debe ser de compasión, empatía y amor. Un trabajador agrícola dijo: “Es más fácil para nosotros recibir alimentos e incluso ayuda financiera de la Iglesia que hacer que nuestros hijos reciban la Primera Comunión”. Necesitamos reducir los obstáculos que enfrentan los pobres para recibir los sacramentos y la atención espiritual. Más tarde podemos ocuparnos del mantenimiento de registros y preocuparnos por continuar una vida de fe.

Lack of spiritual care

Pope Francis calls attention to the “lack of spiritual care” (EG. 200) that is experienced by the poor within our Church. He continues saying, “The poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.”  

Shortly before he died, Bishop John Steinbock asked his priests to care for those whom Jesus loved. He said,

Jesus was found mostly amongst the poor, the sick, the lame, the suffering, the oppressed, the marginalized, the leper, tax collectors, those looked down upon and despised by the upper class. It was to these especially that He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, and manifested God’s love. Who are these people in our present society, and those within our parishes? They are the poor, the homeless families, the farm workers and their families, the migrant, the undocumented, the sick, the imprisoned. The vast majority of these people rarely come to Mass.

These reflections are speaking of those that live on the margin of the Church, living in cars, in labor camps, in isolated clusters of homes, and those that work on the farms and dairies found throughout our diocese, so often without the luxury of transportation and of living a normal scheduled life. We should be pastoral, especially to those that our Lord loves in a special way. It is just such as these that the Kingdom of God is comprised.

These reflections of Pope Francis and Bishop Steinbock resonate with my experience in ministry. Those on the margins of the Church, especially the poor, experience many hardships, but the most shocking is the lack of spiritual attention that they receive in our churches. Jesus never turned away from someone who experienced rejection or pain in their lives. His response consistently surprised people who were holy in practice of faith, but failed to show love to the outcast. He did not fail to offer sight to the blind, forgiveness to the sinner, food to the hungry, consolation to grieving family members, respect for women treated harshly by others, receiving the little children and welcome to people outside the Jewish faith.

Too often in church ministry, the poor experience questions of their faith, readiness and even worthiness before we pay attention to their spiritual needs. We appear to be guards at the gates of the Church, rather than servants of the people of God. It is not always easy to love the poor. Some can be pushy, loud, eccentric, and uncomfortable to be around. Some have problems that we cannot resolve. Yet, we can offer the grace of sacrament, the signs of Jesus love for all.  

Our first response needs to be of compassion, empathy and love. A farmworker said, “It is easier for us to receive food and even financial help from the Church than to have our children receive First Communion.” We need to reduce the obstacles that the poor face in receiving sacrament and spiritual care. Later we can take care of record keeping, and worrying about continuing a life of faith.

Mi propia comodidad

Hace una semana, consideré que Francisco nos llamaba a “salir de la propia comodidad y atreverse a llegar a todas las periferias que necesitan la luz del Evangelio.” (EG. 20) Caminar con campesinos migrantes es mi ‘propia comodidad’. Desde el momento en que me pidieron que trabajara con CMFN, me sentí aliviado de volver a comprometerme plenamente con los campesinos migrantes. Espero entrar la vida una vez más de amigos de la cosecha de cerezas en Oregón y con trabajadores en Kansas, Nebraska, Mississippi y donde sea que pueda encontrar personas en las comunidades donde he trabajado. También espero hacer nuevos amigos en comunidades rurales de inmigrantes.

Al prepararme para mi puesto, hubo un nuevo término que amplía la conciencia de la vida en las comunidades rurales. No solo se preocupa por los trabajadores agrícolas, CMFN está llamando la atención sobre las personas que trabajan en todas las “industrias verdes”. My Comfort Zone

A week ago, I considered Francis calling us to “Go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the “peripheries” in need of the light of the Gospel.” (EG. 20) Walking with migrant farmworkers is my ‘comfort zone’. From the moment that I was asked to work with CMFN, I felt relieved to become fully engaged with migrant farmworkers again. I hope that I will be able to enter once again with cherry harvest friends in Oregon, and with workers in Kansas, Nebraska, Mississippi and wherever I may meet people in communities where I have worked. I also look forward to making new friends throughout our rural immigrant communities.

In preparing for my position, there was a new term that broadens an awareness of life in rural communities. Not only caring for farmworkers, CMFN is calling attention to people working in all “green industries.” This includes forestry, landscaping, irrigation, agricultural construction, energy, food processing, transportation, conservation and resort services. These industries have significant immigrant worker participation. Many travel great distances for their work, at times with seasonal separations of family members.

I am happy to consider the entire green industry community. When I worked in the Diocese of Fresno, it was difficult for religious leaders to recognize that within many farm working families, there are often spouses or other family members engaged in other industries. Attending to the needs of families engaged in a variety of green industries creates some challenges to the ordinary ministry offered in rural communities. It also creates more effective ways of serving the entire rural community.

Rather than seeing my new position as leaving my comfort zone, I am once again entering my comfort zone. Thanks be to God.

Una, santa, católica y apostólica

Nunca me siento más “uno, santo, católico y apostólico” que cuando me reúno con las personas que amo. Tengo familiares y amigos con los que crecí que ya no se identifican como católicos. Algunos participan en otras tradiciones religiosas hoy. Algunos no profesan ningún interés en ninguna afiliación religiosa. Algunos hablan de espiritualidad, separada de cualquier compromiso con una comunidad eclesial. Las razones por que muchos no se identifican con una iglesia es por falta de experimentar testigos vivos de la fe.

La próxima semana, espero encontrarme con amigos que conozco desde hace muchos años. Todos hemos encontrado formas distintas que describimos de la fe hoy. Nos hemos reunido de todas partes del mundo para nuestras pequeñas reuniones, y aunque algunos no se identifiquen con la Iglesia, experimentamos la ‘iglesia’ al unirnos. Todos vivimos con un espíritu de amor que nos inspira a ser “uno, santo, católico y apostólico” aunque algunos no siempre se hayan sentido o hayan sido parte de la institución que llamamos Iglesia.

One, holy, catholic and apostolic  

I never feel more “one, holy, catholic and apostolic” than when gathering with people whom I love. I have family members and friends that I grew up with who no longer identify themselves as Catholic. Some participate in other religious traditions today. Some profess no interest in any religious affiliation. Some speak of spirituality, separated from any commitment to a church community. The reasons why many do not identify with a church is due to a lack of experiencing living witnesses of the faith.

Next week, I look forward to meeting friends that I have known for many years. We have all found distinct ways that we describe of faith today. We have come together from all over the world for our small gatherings, and while some may not identify themselves with the Church, we experience ‘church’ in coming together. We all live with a spirit of love that inspires us to be “one, holy, catholic and apostolic” even if some have not always felt or been part of the institution that we call Church.

Cuando leo la historia de la mujer samaritana junto al pozo, tengo duda sobre cómo responder pastoralmente al divorcio. En la comunidad católica, vivimos con un enfoque idealista del matrimonio. La persona casada se compromete a un compromiso por toda la vida. Los que divorcian se experimentan exclusión dentro de la Iglesia Católica. ¿Deberíamos sentirnos cómodos con nuestro ministerio a los divorciados?

En este evangelio, Jesús hablaba con la Samaritana y ella tenía la fe ardiendo dentro de ella. Sintió su amor, respeto y el perdón de Dios. Estaba tan conmovida por el hecho de que Jesús la tratara con dignidad y alegría que fue al pueblo y anunció que él podría ser el Mesías. Ella fue su testigo para el pueblo, y muchos salieron a verlo.

¿Cómo podemos comparar el encuentro de Jesús y la Samaritana con la experiencia de los divorciados en la Iglesia hoy? En la Comunión tenemos una experiencia íntima con Jesús. Hay tantos en matrimonios irregulares asistiendo las misas, pero no comulgan. Me siento triste y vergonzoso que la mujer Samaritana no pudo comulgar en la pastoral de la Iglesia hoy. Necesitamos mejores prácticas para abordar a los divorciados.

How should we respond to divorce?

(Consider the gospel for today’s Mass)

When I read the story of the Samaritan woman at the well, I wonder how to respond pastorally to divorce. In the Catholic community, we live with an idealistic approach to marriage. The married person commits to a lifetime commitment. Those who divorce experience exclusion within the Catholic Church. Should we be comfortable with our ministry to the divorced?

In this gospel, as Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman, she had faith burning inside her. She felt his love, respect, and the forgiveness of God. She was moved by the way that Jesus treated her, with dignity and joy, that she went to her town and announced that he might be the Messiah. She was his witness to the people, and many came out to see him.

How can we compare the encounter of Jesus and the Samaritan woman with the experience of the divorced in the Church today? In Communion we have an intimate experience with Jesus. There are so many in irregular marriages attending the masses, but they do not receive Communion. I feel sad and ashamed that the Samaritan woman could not receive Communion in the pastoral ministry of the Church today. We need better ways to approach the divorced.

¿Quién es el mejor Redentorista hoy?

Participo en una reunión de ZOOM cada semana con amigos que fueron al seminario conmigo hace más de cincuenta años. Comenzamos cada reunión recordando a quienes nos enseñaron en el seminario; sacerdotes y hermanos que nos introdujeron en el carisma y la fraternidad de los Redentoristas. Los recordamos en sus mejores momentos y a veces en momentos menos gloriosos, pero los reconocemos como nuestros mentores, maestros y amigos. Nos invitaron a compartir la misión Redentorista que se enuncia bien en la Constitución Redentorista 3.

“Los más abandonados, a los que la Congregación es enviada de modo especial, son aquellos a quienes la Iglesia no ha podido proporcionar aún medios suficientes de salvación; los que nunca oyeron el mensaje de la Iglesia o no lo aceptan al menos como buena nueva, y finalmente aquellos a quienes perjudica la división de la Iglesia”. (C.SS.R. Const. 3)

Como Redentorista que busca a los “más abandonados”, hay una persona a la que considero el mejor Redentorista hoy. No es miembro de nuestra Congregación, pero suena como nosotros, incluso más que muchos de mis cohermanos hoy. Reconoce a las personas al margen de la vida y de la iglesia. Quiere que los más abandonados escuchen la Palabra de Dios, que sean levantados de la desesperanza y de la violencia, que reciban atención espiritual, que sean acogidos a los sacramentos y a la gracia dentro de nuestra Iglesia. Lo cito casi a diario en estos blogs. Él quiere que seamos “una iglesia pobre y para los pobres”. Realmente es un Jesuita, pero suena como la C&S #3 de los Redentoristas.

“Quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual. La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe. La opción preferencial por los pobres debe traducirse principalmente en una atención religiosa privilegiada y prioritaria.” (EG. 200)

Who is the best Redemptorist today?

I participate in a ZOOM reunion each week with men who went to the seminary with me over fifty years ago. We begin each meeting remembering those who taught us in the seminary, priests and brothers who introduced us to the charism and fellowship of the Redemptorists. We remember them in their best moments and sometimes in less than glorious moments, but we recognize them as our mentors, teachers and friends. They invited us to share in the mission of the Redemptorists that is stated so well in the Redemptorist Constitution 3.

“The most abandoned, to whom in particular the Congregation is sent, are those for whom the Church has not yet been able to provide sufficient means of salvation, those who have never heard the Church’s message, or at least do not receive it as the “Good News”, and finally those who suffer harm because of division in the Church.”  (C.SS.R. Const. 3)

As a Redemptorist seeking out the “most abandoned”, there is one person whom I consider the best Redemptorist today. No, he is not a member of our Congregation, but he sounds like us, even more than many of my confreres today. He recognizes people on the margins of life and our church. He wants the most abandoned to hear the Word of God, to be lifted up from hopelessness and violence, to receive spiritual attention, to be welcomed to the sacraments and grace within our Church. I quote him almost daily in these blogs. He wants us to be “a church that is poor and for the poor.” He may be a Jesuit, but he sounds like C&S 3.

“I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith. Our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care.” (EG. 200)
