Falta de atención espiritual
El Papa Francisco llama la atención sobre la “falta de atención espiritual” (EG. 200) que experimentan los pobres dentro de nuestra Iglesia. Continúa diciendo: “Los pobres tienen una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe”.
Poco antes de morir, el obispo John Steinbock pidió a sus sacerdotes que cuidaran de aquellos a quienes Jesús amaba. Él dijo,
“Jesús se encontraba principalmente entre los pobres, los enfermos, los cojos, los afligidos, los oprimidos, los marginados, los leprosos, los cobradores de impuestos y los despreciados por la alta sociedad. A ellos especialmente Jesús les proclamaba el Reino y el amor de Dios. ¿Quiénes son estas personas en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras parroquias? Son los pobres, las familias desamparadas, los trabajadores agrícolas y sus familias, los migrantes, los indocumentados, los enfermos, los prisioneros. La gran mayoría de estas personas solo asisten a misa de vez en cuando.
Estas reflexiones hablan de los que viven en el margen de la Iglesia, en carros, en campos de trabajo, en grupos aislados de casas, y en granjas y lecherías a través de la diócesis sin el lujo del transporte y sin estabilidad en sus vidas. Debemos ayudar pastoralmente, especialmente a aquellos que Nuestro Señor ama de una manera especial. Para ellos es el Reino de Dios.”

Estas reflexiones del Papa Francisco y el obispo Steinbock resuenan con mi experiencia en el ministerio. Los marginados de la Iglesia, especialmente los pobres, experimentan muchas penurias, pero lo más chocante es la falta de atención espiritual que reciben en nuestras iglesias. Jesús nunca le dio la espalda a alguien que experimentó rechazo o dolor en su vida. Su respuesta sorprendió constantemente a las personas que eran líderes en la práctica de la fe, pero que no mostraban amor a los marginados. No dejó de ofrecer vista a los ciegos, perdón al pecador, comida a los hambrientos, consuelo a los familiares afligidos, respeto a las mujeres maltratadas, acogida de los niños pequeños y acogida a las personas ajenas a la fe judía.
Con demasiada frecuencia en la iglesia, los pobres experimentan preguntas sobre su fe, su preparación e incluso su dignidad antes de que prestemos atención a sus necesidades espirituales. Parecemos guardias a las puertas de la Iglesia, más que servidores del pueblo de Dios. No siempre es fácil amar a los pobres. Algunos pueden ser agresivos, ruidosos, excéntricos e incómodos. Algunos tienen problemas que no podemos resolver. Sin embargo, podemos ofrecer la gracia del sacramento, los signos del amor de Jesús por todos.
Nuestra primera respuesta debe ser de compasión, empatía y amor. Un trabajador agrícola dijo: “Es más fácil para nosotros recibir alimentos e incluso ayuda financiera de la Iglesia que hacer que nuestros hijos reciban la Primera Comunión”. Necesitamos reducir los obstáculos que enfrentan los pobres para recibir los sacramentos y la atención espiritual. Más tarde podemos ocuparnos del mantenimiento de registros y preocuparnos por continuar una vida de fe.

Lack of spiritual care
Pope Francis calls attention to the “lack of spiritual care” (EG. 200) that is experienced by the poor within our Church. He continues saying, “The poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.”
Shortly before he died, Bishop John Steinbock asked his priests to care for those whom Jesus loved. He said,
Jesus was found mostly amongst the poor, the sick, the lame, the suffering, the oppressed, the marginalized, the leper, tax collectors, those looked down upon and despised by the upper class. It was to these especially that He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, and manifested God’s love. Who are these people in our present society, and those within our parishes? They are the poor, the homeless families, the farm workers and their families, the migrant, the undocumented, the sick, the imprisoned. The vast majority of these people rarely come to Mass.
These reflections are speaking of those that live on the margin of the Church, living in cars, in labor camps, in isolated clusters of homes, and those that work on the farms and dairies found throughout our diocese, so often without the luxury of transportation and of living a normal scheduled life. We should be pastoral, especially to those that our Lord loves in a special way. It is just such as these that the Kingdom of God is comprised.

These reflections of Pope Francis and Bishop Steinbock resonate with my experience in ministry. Those on the margins of the Church, especially the poor, experience many hardships, but the most shocking is the lack of spiritual attention that they receive in our churches. Jesus never turned away from someone who experienced rejection or pain in their lives. His response consistently surprised people who were holy in practice of faith, but failed to show love to the outcast. He did not fail to offer sight to the blind, forgiveness to the sinner, food to the hungry, consolation to grieving family members, respect for women treated harshly by others, receiving the little children and welcome to people outside the Jewish faith.
Too often in church ministry, the poor experience questions of their faith, readiness and even worthiness before we pay attention to their spiritual needs. We appear to be guards at the gates of the Church, rather than servants of the people of God. It is not always easy to love the poor. Some can be pushy, loud, eccentric, and uncomfortable to be around. Some have problems that we cannot resolve. Yet, we can offer the grace of sacrament, the signs of Jesus love for all.
Our first response needs to be of compassion, empathy and love. A farmworker said, “It is easier for us to receive food and even financial help from the Church than to have our children receive First Communion.” We need to reduce the obstacles that the poor face in receiving sacrament and spiritual care. Later we can take care of record keeping, and worrying about continuing a life of faith.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
