LA 109ª JORNADA MUNDIAL DEL MIGRANTE Y DEL REFUGIADO

Libres de elegir si migrar o quedarse
Hoy es el 109º Día Mundial de los Migrantes y Refugiados. El Papa Francisco llama la atención sobre la libertad de elegir si migrar o quedarse en su país de origen. Afirma que todas las personas son “libres de elegir si migrar o quedarse” en su país de origen. Este derecho se afirma en la historia de la migración de personas en busca de la “Tierra Prometida”. El pueblo judío y los primeros cristianos celebraron el hecho de que nuestro Padre en la fe, Abraham, era “un arameo errante”. Cuando hubo sequía en Israel, la comunidad israelita fue a Egipto. Cuando huyeron de la esclavitud en Egipto, vagaron por el desierto durante cuarenta años. Las tradiciones judía y cristiana celebraron la nobleza de su migración.
La migración trajo gente de todo el mundo a los Estados Unidos. Hemos celebrado la historia de este país como tierra de inmigrantes. Cuando el mundo estaba en guerra en la Primera Guerra Mundial, la Iglesia inició la Jornada Mundial de los Migrantes y Refugiados en 1915. La presión de la guerra, las naciones que luchaban por la independencia en todo el mundo y los desastres naturales, la migración de personas estaba en un nivel que atrajo atención internacional y en ocasiones violencia dirigida a los inmigrantes.
Dentro de la Iglesia se desarrollaron muchas sociedades para diferentes grupos de inmigrantes. A medida que avanzaba el siglo XX, muchos inmigrantes y refugiados comenzaron a llegar a Estados Unidos desde todas partes del mundo, no principalmente desde Europa. Las tensiones basadas en raza, etnia, lengua y cultura comenzaron a aumentar en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Hoy en día, hay muchas personas que tendrán dificultades con la declaración del Papa Francisco: “Libre de elegir entre migrar o quedarse” como un derecho humano.
La enseñanza no es nueva ni es sólo una respuesta a las recientes tensiones sobre la migración en todo el mundo. Es parte de nuestra herencia de fe desde los tiempos de Abraham. Puede que defender este derecho no sea popular en muchos lugares hoy en día, pero esta enseñanza proviene de las creencias judeocristianas que se encuentran en las Escrituras y en las prácticas de la Iglesia desde la época de los Apóstoles.
En una época de tanta movilidad global debido a los avances en la tecnología y el transporte, debemos reconocer que la capacidad de migrar o quedarse no es privilegio de unos pocos, sino que está abierta a todas las personas, especialmente a aquellas que carecen de libertad, salud. y la unidad familiar tienen derecho a migrar. Que Dios continúe bendiciéndonos con compasión por las personas desesperadas del mundo.

Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay
Today is the 109th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Pope Francis calls attention on the freedom to choose whether to migrate or to stay in your country of origin. He assert that all people are “free to choose whether to migrate or to stay” in their country of origin. This right is asserted in the story of the migration of people in search of the “Promised Land.” The Jewish people and the early Christians celebrated the fact that our Father in Faith, Abraham was “a wandering Aramaean”. When there was drought in Israel, the Israelite community went to Egypt. When they fled slavery in Egypt, they wandered in the desert for forty years. The Jewish and Christian traditions celebrated the nobility of their wandering.
Migration brought people from all over the world to the United States. We have celebrated the story of this country as a land of immigrants. When the world was at war in World War I, the Church initiated the World Day of Migrants and Refugees in 1915. The pressure of war, nations struggling for independence around the world and natural disasters, the migration of people was at a level that drew international attention and at times violence aimed at immigrants.
Within the Church many societies developed for different immigrant groups. As the twentieth century progressed, many migrants and refugees began to come to the United States from all parts of the world, not primarily from Europe. Tensions based on race, ethnicity, language and culture began to rise in the second half of the twentieth century. Today, there are many people who will have difficulty with the statement of Pope Francis, “Free to choose whether to migrate or stay” as a human right.
The teaching is not new or only a response to increased tensions about migration around the world. It is part of our faith heritage since the time of Abraham. Defending this right may not be popular in many places today, but this teaching comes from Judeo Christian beliefs found in Scripture and in the practices of the Church since the time of the Apostles.
In a time of so much global mobility because of advances in technology and transportation, we need to recognize that the ability to migrate or to stay is not the privilege of only a few, but open to all people, especially those who lack freedom, health and family unity have the right to migrate. May God continue to bless us with compassion for the desperate people of the world.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
