Cuando no hay buenas opciones
“Libres de partir, libres de quedarse”
Al reflexionar sobre el mensaje del Papa Francisco para la Jornada Mundial de los Migrantes y Refugiados, quiero añadir un pensamiento a la reflexión. ¿Qué debe hacer una persona cuando no hay buenas opciones? Los inmigrantes modernos se enfrentan a un mundo que no respeta su decisión de migrar. He caminado con migrantes durante treinta años y he visto mucho dolor en las vidas de las personas que toman la decisión de migrar. No puedo decir que la elección de migrar o quedarse sea buena o mala. Cualquiera de las dos opciones la toman aquellos que se enfrentan a “elecciones no buenas”. Como me dijo un sacerdote en México: “La migración es un acto de desesperación”.
Un joven de catorce años entró solo en el desierto. No tenía dinero para pagar la entrada de un ‘coyote’ a Estados Unidos. Salió al desierto más allá del muro. Esperó hasta que un coyote condujo a un grupo de migrantes al desierto. Los siguió aproximadamente una milla detrás de ellos durante dos días. Temía que, si el coyote lo descubría, lo matarían. Los perdió de vista al tercer día. Al cuarto día se quedó sin agua y pensó que iba a morir. Empezó a llover con tanta fuerza que pudo llenar sus botellas de agua. Entró en Phoenix al octavo día.
Después de escuchar su historia, le pregunté qué lo motivó a irse de casa. Dijo: “Después de que asesinaron a mi padre y a mi hermano, tuve que irme”. Sabía que no podía estar seguro en su país de origen y el familiar en quien más confiaba estaba en los Estados Unidos.
El joven no tenía ninguna “buena elección” que tomar. Quédese donde asesinaron a su padre y su hermano o arriesgue su vida en un desierto para ingresar a un país que lo enviará de regreso al país donde no estará seguro cuando lo atrapen.
No nos corresponde a nosotros juzgar si la decisión de migrar o no es una buena decisión. Simplemente defendemos el derecho de la persona a elegir y hacemos todo lo posible para mejorar la situación.

“Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay”
As I reflect on Pope Francis’ message for World Day of Migrants and Refugees, I want to add a thought to the reflection. What is a person to do when there are no good choices? Modern migrants face a world that does not honor their choice to migrate. I have walked with migrants for thirty years, and I have seen much heartache in the lives of people who make the choice to migrate. I cannot say that a choice to migrate or to stay is good or bad. Either choice is made by those who are faced with “no good choices”. As a priest in Mexico told me, “Migration is an act of desperation.”
A fourteen-year-old man entered the desert alone. He had no money to pay for a ‘coyote’ to enter the U.S. He went out into the desert past the wall. He waited until a coyote led a group of migrants into the desert. He followed about a mile behind them for two days. He feared that if the coyote discovered him, he would be killed. He lost sight of them on the third day. The fourth day, he ran out of water and thought he would die. It began to rain, hard enough for him to fill his water bottles. He entered Phoenix on the eighth day.
After hearing his story, I asked what motivated him to leave home. He said, “After they murdered my father and my brother, I had to leave.” He knew that he could not be safe in his home country, and the relative whom he trusted most was in the United States.
The young man had no ‘good choice’ to make. Stay where his father and brother were murdered or risk his life in a desert to enter a country that will send him back to the country where he is not safe when they catch him.
It is not our place to judge if a decision to migrate or not is a good decision. We simply stand for the right of the person to choose, and do what we can to make the situation better.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
