¿Qué le diría Jesús a un migrante?
Mientras veo la imagen en la “Casa de la Caridad Hogar Migrante” de Jesús cargando a un migrante en su viaje, me pregunto qué le estaba diciendo Jesús al migrante. “Estoy contigo, hijo mío”. “No estás solo en este viaje”. “Tú eres mi hijo amado”. Todas las palabras devocionales que podemos decir en oración, Jesús está calmando al migrante oprimido. No hay recriminación, nada más que amor y apoyo. Este es Jesús con nosotros cuando más lo necesitamos
He caminado y trabajado junto a los migrantes durante muchos años, pero si alguien me pregunta qué hago por los migrantes, tengo que responder: “Nada”. No soy médico, ni abogado, ni trabajador social, soy sacerdote, misionero. El migrante en el viaje necesitará un médico, un abogado y un trabajador social. Pueden estar presentes, puede que no. Lo que puedo hacer por el migrante es alentarlo, asegurarle su bondad. Puedo mostrarles la dignidad que tienen y honrarlos cuando todo lo que parece estar en el mundo es oscuro. El estrés de la migración, la inseguridad, los miedos y los rechazos pueden dejar a uno cuestionando su dignidad. El misionero puede saludarlos con dignidad, alegría y respeto.
Cuando dirigíamos Casa San Alfonso, nuestros jóvenes cantaban la canción “Un Día Caminaba” casi cada vez que nos reuníamos para algún momento de oración. Es el canto de un joven solitario, con una tristeza de querer morir, que llegó a reconocer el amor de Jesús. Era el tema de nuestro grupo. Aquí está la traducción de:

Cuando vi la foto de Jesús y el migrante en el albergue, me vino a la mente cantar esa canción casi todos los días con los jóvenes migrantes. Así como Jesús levantó al migrante, ¿podemos darle vida al espíritu de los migrantes con una sonrisa amistosa, una palabra amable, una bendición? ¿Podemos ofrecer hospitalidad al migrante? ¿Podemos reconocer al migrante como aquel que tiene un compañero cercano, Jesús?

As I view the picture in “Casa de la Caridad Hogar Migrante” of Jesus carrying a migrant on his journey, I wonder what Jesus was saying to the migrant. “I am with you my son.” “You are not alone on this journey.” “You are my beloved son.” All the devotional words that we may say in prayer, Jesus is soothing the downtrodden migrant. There is no recrimination, nothing but love and support. This is Jesus with us when we most need him.
I have walked with and worked alongside migrants for many years, but if someone asks what I do for migrants, I have to say, “Nothing.” I am not a doctor, or a lawyer, or a social worker, I am a priest, a missionary. The migrant on the journey will need a doctor, a lawyer and a social worker. They may be present, they may not. What I can do for the migrant is to encourage them, assure them of their goodness. I can show them the dignity they have and honor them when all there appears to be in the world is dark. The stress of migration, the insecurity, the fears and the rejections can leave one questioning their dignity. The missionary can greet them with dignity, joy and respect.
When we ran Casa San Alfonso, our migrant young people sang the song, “Un Día Caminaba” almost every time that we gathered for any time to pray. It is the song of a lonely youth, with sadness to the point of wanting to die, who came to recognize Jesus’ love. It was the theme song of our group. Here is translation of:

When I saw the picture of Jesus and the migrant at the shelter, I called to mind singing that song almost every day with migrant youth. As Jesus lifted the migrant, can we life the spirits of migrants with a friendly smile, a kind word, a blessing? Can we offer hospitality to the migrant? Can we recognize the migrant as one who has a close companion with him or her, Jesus?
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
