“Walk with me” / “Síganme”
“Síganme”
Escribí “Camina con mi pueblo” con la esperanza de que gente pueda comprender y amar a los migrantes con quienes he caminado durante los últimos treinta años. Algunas personas admiran los esfuerzos que se hacen en favor de los pobres y sus hijos, pero otras difaman a los migrantes, insistiendo en que son criminales. En lugar de preocuparse por los migrantes y los refugiados, persiguen a las personas más desafortunadas de nuestro tiempo. La invitación a “caminar con mi pueblo” implica algo más que una invitación a caminar conmigo. No es simplemente una invitación a observar a los migrantes para ver su sufrimiento. Es una invitación a sentir la pérdida, el dolor, la falta de respeto.
Cuando los primeros discípulos acudieron a él, le pidieron que fuera su maestro. Pero él no respondió como maestro. Simplemente dijo: “Síganme”. Aprendieron el evangelio con su ejemplo. Sintieron la vergüenza del paralítico que fue perdonado de su pecado, el aislamiento del leproso, la desgracia de la mujer sorprendida en adulterio, y tantas otras personas que se creyeron indignas del amor y la misericordia de Dios.
Invito a la gente no sólo a caminar con mi pueblo, sino a caminar conmigo. A descubrir la emoción, el dolor de caminar con la gente con la que Jesús se identificó. “Fui forastero y ustedes me recibieron en su casa”. Puedo contarles sobre mi camino con personas al margen de la Iglesia, con personas que trabajan en los campos, con padres cuyo trabajo les impide estar en los partidos de baloncesto de sus hijos, o con padres que no pueden estar presentes en momentos importantes en la vida de sus hijos. Pero lo más importante es escuchar a los padres separados de sus hijos, entrar en casas rodantes con láminas de plástico sobre las ventanas rotas, ver los dormitorios de los niños sin camas, y personas que cuidan a padres ancianos, parientes discapacitados y niños cuyo único acceso a la atención médica era Medicare y el acceso a comidas saludables provenía del programa SNAP, ahora discontinuado.
Hay muchas personas dedicadas que trabajan en refugios, entregan alimentos a las personas necesitadas, responden con ayuda a las familias separadas y ofrecen servicios de protección para los pobres. Sin embargo, el llamado de Jesús nos invita a algo más que actos de caridad. Jesús amaba a los discípulos que le preguntaban dónde vivía. Vio que querían algo más que enseñar, así que dijo: “Sígueme”. Quería que los discípulos no solo caminaran con la gente que Jesús amaba, sino que también quería que amaran a los ciegos, a los cojos, a los niños, a las adúlteras, a los publicanos, a los marginados. La manera en que sus discípulos podían entender cómo Jesús amaba a estos marginados de la sociedad era más que simplemente observar, alimentar y enseñar a los marginados. Necesitaban sentir su soledad, su dolor, su pena y su vergüenza. Necesitaban conocer su fe, su esperanza y su alegría. Jesús se relacionaba con los pobres, no para enseñarles, sino para acompañarlos. Invitó a los discípulos no solo a caminar con su pueblo, sino a caminar con Él.

“Walk with me”
I wrote “Walk with My People”, hoping that people may understand and love the migrants with whom I have walked over the past thirty years. Some people admire efforts made on behalf of the poor and their children. But others malign migrants, insisting that they are criminals. Instead of caring for the migrant and refugee, they persecute the most unfortunate people of our time. There is more to the invitation to “walk with my people”, it is an invitation to walk with me. It is not simply an invitation to observe the migrants to see their suffering. It is an invitation to feel the loss, the heartache, the disrespect.
When the early disciples came to him, they asked him to be their teacher. But he did not respond as a teacher. He simply said, “Follow me.” They learned the gospel by his example. They felt the shame of the paralytic being forgiven of sin, the isolation of the leper, the disgrace of the woman caught in adultery, and so many others believing themselves to be unworthy of God’s love and mercy.
I invite people not only to walk with my people, but to walk with me. To discover the emotion, the heartache of walking with the people with whom Jesus identified himself. “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.” I can tell you about my journey with people on the margins of the Church, with people working in the fields, with parents whose work prevents them from being at their children’s basketball games, or with parents unable to be present for important moments in the lives of their children. But more important is listening to parents separated from their children, walking into trailer homes with sheets of plastic over broken windows, seeing children’s bedrooms with no beds, and people caring for elderly parents, handicapped relatives and children whose only access to health care was Medicare and access to healthy meals came from the now discontinued SNAP program.
There are many dedicated people staffing shelters, delivering food to people in need, responding with help for separated families and offering protective services for the poor. Yet the call of Jesus invites us to more than acts of charity. Jesus loved the disciples who asked where he lived. He saw that they wanted more than teaching, so he said, “Follow me”. He wanted the disciples not only to walk with the people whom Jesus loved, but he wanted them to love the blind, the lame, the child, the adulteress, the tax-collector, the outcast. The way that his disciples could understand how Jesus loved these outcasts of society was more than simply observing, feeding and teaching the outcasts. They needed to feel their loneliness, pain, grief and shame. They needed to know their faith, hope and joy. Jesus engaged with the poor, not to teach them, but to accompany them. He invited the disciples not just to walk with his people, but to walk with Him.
