Visitando albergues para migrantes
La capacidad de ingresar a los centros de migrantes no es una tarea fácil. Se debe confiar en uno para no ofender ni lastimar a los de la casa. Se protegen los derechos de cada individuo en la casa ya que las casas están lugares seguros para los emigrantes. Las personas pueden estar escapando de situaciones peligrosas, por lo que se protege su privacidad. Algunos han sido victimizados en el camino, abusados o secuestrados. Algunos tienen heridas sufridas en el viaje.
La primera parte de nuestra búsqueda como Redentoristas con ganas de profundizar en el servicio pastoral de los migrantes comienza con visitas presenciales a albergues de migrantes en México. Solo he visitado dos “casas migrantes” en el centro de México hasta ahora. Hay más de 100 refugios reconocidos por la Cruz Roja desde la frontera sur de México hasta los EE. UU. La mitad de las casas están cerca de la frontera con los EE. UU. La mayoría de estas “casas migrantes” tienen relación con diócesis, comunidades y otras instituciones religiosas. Estos son lugares temporales de seguridad que ofrecen a los migrantes descanso, alimentación y albergue. Los centros ofrecen atención médica, y atención psicológica y sociológica. La atención está limitada a tres días.
Puede haber diferentes declaraciones de misión y visión en cada casa. La declaración al ingresar a la “Casa de la Caridad Hogar Migrante” en San Luis es dada por la Arquidiócesis de San Luis, Potosí. Afirma:
Misión
Servir a todo peregrino, sin distinción de credo, nacionalidad y género, reconociendo en el migrante el “auténtico signo de los tiempos”; caminando todos juntos en el camino de la esperanza porque ya no somos extranjeros, somos ciudadanos ejerciendo el derecho humano básico a emigrar.
Visión
Ser un alberque que dé testimonio de la generosidad y compromiso del pueblo potosino hacia el fenómeno migratorio; promoviendo una cultura de respeto y defensa de los Derechos Humanos.
Cada casa migrante fue impresionante en su limpieza y la calma que se experimentaba en las casas. Estoy seguro que para el migrante que ha viajado durante días, este tipo de albergue es un alivio, un momento para recargar energías y para algunos un momento para reconsiderar el valor de continuar su viaje o regresar a sus hogares. La parte más impresionante de cada casa fue el personal. Fue su paciencia, su calma y la calidez en cómo acogieron y trabajaron con los migrantes. Todas las mujeres voluntarias y del personal son llamadas madres por los migrantes. La mayoría no son hermanas religiosas. Los migrantes reconocen el respeto que se les muestra y responden de la misma manera a los voluntarios y al personal.

The ability to enter migrant centers is not an easy task. One must be trusted to not offend or hurt the guests of the house. Rights of each individual in the house is protected as the houses are to be safe places for emigrants. People may be escaping dangerous situations, so their privacy is guarded. Some have been victimized on the way, abused or having been sequestered. Some have injuries suffered on the journey.
The first part of our search as Redemptorists wanting to enter more deeply into pastoral service of migrants begins with in person visits to migrant shelters in Mexico. I have only visited two “casas migrantes” in central Mexico so far. There are over 100 shelters recognized by the Red Cross from the southern border of Mexico to the U.S. Half of the casas are near the U.S. border. Most of these “casas migrantes” have relationship with dioceses, religious communities and other religious institutions. These are temporary places of safety that offer migrants rest, food and shelter. The centers offer medical attention, and attention of physiological counselors and social workers. The care is limited to three days.
There may be different mission and vision statements at each house. The statement as one enters “Casa de la Caridad Hogar Migrante” in San Luis is given by the Archdiocese of San Luis, Potosi. It states:
Mission
To serve all strangers, without distinction of creed, nationality and gender, recognizing in the migrant the “authentic sign of the times”; walking all together on the path of hope because we are no longer foreigners, we are citizens exercising the basic human right to emigrate.
Vision
Being a shelter that bears witness to the generosity and commitment of the people of Potosí towards the migratory phenomenon; promoting a culture of respect and defense of Human Rights.
Each casa migrante was impressive in its cleanliness and the calm experienced in the houses. I am certain that for the migrant who has traveled for days, such hostels are a relief, a moment to recharge and for some a moment to reconsider the value of continuing on their journey or returning to their homes. The most impressive part of each house was the staff. It was their patience, their calm and the warmth in how they welcomed and worked with the migrants. All the women volunteers and staff are called mothers by the migrants. Most are not religious sisters. The migrants recognize the respect shown to them, and they respond in kind to the volunteers and the staff.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
