Reconocer la fe
Un joven de 17 años pidió ser bautizado. Me dijo que era el último de siete hijos. Todos sus hermanos y hermanas fueron bautizados, y su familia era activa en la iglesia. Sin embargo, cuando nació, su padre se fue a trabajar a los Estados Unidos. Sus padres decidieron bautizarlo cuando el padre regresó, pero su padre murió en un accidente. En la tristeza, su madre no lo bautizó. Ahora como adulto, quería ser católico. Cuando hablé con él, me sorprendió lo mucho que ya sabía sobre la fe católica.
Le di una Biblia y lo invité a leer el Evangelio de San Marcos. Debía leer un capítulo por día, y el próximo domingo hablaríamos sobre lo que leía. El domingo siguiente, me dijo que había leído a todo Mark y la mitad de Lucas. Obviamente, estudió el texto y quería saber más.
El próximo domingo, terminó Lucas y Hechos de los Apóstoles. Le di más libros y folletos para que estudiara. En cuatro semanas, le pregunté cuándo quería ser bautizado. Él demostró suficientemente su deseo de ser católico y fue bautizado, confirmado y recibió su Primera Eucaristía.
La alegría del evangelio
Invito a los jóvenes a poner tanto interés en aprender la fe como lo hizo este joven. La Biblia es la palabra de Dios. Es una alegría leer. No tengas miedo de ello. Puedes internalizar el mensaje. Recuerda que las Escrituras siempre nos alegran.
El Papa Francisco comienza su Exhortación Apostólica, “La Alegría del Evangelio”, “La alegría del Evangelio llena el corazón y la vida entera de los que se encuentran con Jesús” (EG. 1) Nuestro mensaje de fe debe ser feliz. El Papa Francisco dice que debemos ser felices, hay demasiados con cara de vinagre. Sin alegría, no nos encontraremos con Jesús. Nuestra jornada de fe comienza, como la vida de Juan Diego con una celebración de la vida. Juan Diego disfrutaba las canciones de los pájaros en el camino a México, y disfrutaba el olor de las flores cuando bajó del Tepeyac, vemos señales del amor de Dios a nuestro alrededor.
La alegría del sacramento
Hay señales del amor de Dios a nuestro alrededor. Hay siete señales que Jesús dio a sus discípulos y sus seguidores. Son los siete sacramentos. Los sacramentos son signos sensibles, dados por Cristo, para dar a su pueblo la gracia.
El sacramento es un signo sensible de la presencia de Cristo en la persona de fe. En la eucaristía, los signos sensibles son pan y vino. La misa nos invita entrar la última cena con Jesús. Como Jesús les dio a los apóstoles su cuerpo y sangre, él nos da lo mismo en la misa. Es un misterio, ya que todavía aparece como pan y vino, ahora es su cuerpo y su sangre.
En lugar de luchar con el misterio, el católico cree porque cree. Creemos que, en cada sacramento, nos encontramos a Cristo.

To recognize faith
A young man, 17 years old, asked to be baptized. He told me he was the last of seven children. All his brothers and sisters were baptized, and his family was active in the church. Yet, when he was born, his father went to the United States to work. His parents decided to baptize him when the father returned, but his father died in an accident. In sadness, his mother did not baptize him. Now as an adult, he wanted to be Catholic. When I spoke with him, he surprised me with how much he already knew about the Catholic faith.
I gave him a Bible, and invited him to read the Gospel of St. Mark. He was to read one chapter per day, and the next Sunday we would talk about what he read. The following Sunday, he told me that he read all of Mark and half of Luke. Obviously, he studied the text and he wanted to know more.
The next Sunday, he finished Luke and Acts of the Apostles. I gave him more books and pamphlets for him to study. In four weeks, I asked him when he wanted to be baptized. He sufficiently showed his desire to be a Catholic and he was baptized, confirmed and received his First Eucharist.
The Joy of the Gospel
I invite young people to place as much interest in learning the faith as this young man did. The Bible is the word of God. It is a joy to read. Do not be afraid of it. You can internalize the message. Remember that the Scriptures always gives us joy.
Pope Francis begins his Apostolic Exhortation, “The Joy of the Gospel” with these words, “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus.”(EG. 1) Our message of faith must be joyful. Pope Francis says that we should be happy in the faith, there are too many sourpusses. Without joy in our lives, we will not encounter Jesus. Our faith journey begins, as we saw in the life of Juan Diego with a celebration of life. As Juan Diego enjoyed the songs of the birds on the way to Mexico, and as he enjoyed the odor of the flowers coming down from Tepeyac, we see signs of God’s love all around us.
The Joy of Sacrament
There are signs of God’s love around us. There are seven signs given by Jesus to his disciples and their followers. They are the seven sacraments. The sacraments are for the Church outward signs, given to us by Christ, to give to his people grace.
The sacrament is a physical sign of the presence of Christ in the person of faith. In the Eucharist, the physical signs are bread and wine. The Mass invites us to enter the last supper with Jesus. As Jesus gave the apostles his body and blood, he gives us the same in the mass. We believe that and wine become Jesus’ Body and Blood.
Instead of struggling with the mystery, the Catholic believes because he believes. We believe that in each sacrament, we encounter Christ.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
