El viernes, en la lectura de la primera carta de Pablo a los Corintios, Pablo dijo que “No me envió Cristo a bautizar, sino a predicar el Evangelio”. Pablo bautizó y llevó a la gente a la gracia del sacramento, pero su llamado no era como pastor. Fue llamado a predicar el Evangelio. A veces reconocemos el trabajo de alguien, pero no reconocemos lo que da sentido a la vida de esa persona. Al acercarnos al Día del Trabajo, considero el propósito del día. No se trata de celebrar el trabajo, sino de honrar al trabajador, al obrero. No somos simplemente resumidos por el trabajo que hacemos.
Cuando la gente se preguntaba por las palabras y las obras de Jesús, preguntaban de dónde había obtenido su autoridad para enseñar. Dijeron: “¿No es éste el hijo del carpintero?” La forma en que hicieron la pregunta es irrespetuosa con José. Él era sólo un carpintero a sus ojos. Ni siquiera se le dio el respeto de ser identificado por su nombre.
El Día del Trabajo es un día para honrar al trabajador, ya sea un carpintero, un plomero, un techador, un trabajador de la salud, un maestro o cualquier otro trabajador. El Día del Trabajo es un feriado federal para reconocer las muchas contribuciones que los trabajadores han hecho a la fortaleza, la prosperidad y el bienestar de los Estados Unidos. Paul no se identificaba solo con una parte de su vocación. Celebramos este fin de semana al trabajador que es mucho más importante que el trabajo realizado.

To preach the Gospel
On Friday, in the reading from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, Paul said that “he was not sent to baptize, but to preach the Gospel.” Paul did baptize and bring people to the grace of sacrament, but his call was not as a pastor. He was called to preach the Gospel. Sometimes we recognize someone’s work, while not recognizing what gives meaning to that person’s life. As we approach Labor Day, I consider the day’s purpose. It is not about celebrating work, but about honoring the worker, the laborer. We are not simply summed up by the work that we do.
When people wondered at the words and the works of Jesus, they asked where he got his authority to teach. They said, “Isn´t he the carpenter´s son?” The way that they asked the question is disrespectful of Joseph. He was just a carpenter in their eyes. He wasn´t even given the respect of being identified by name.
Labor Day is a day to honor the laborer, whether a carpenter, a plumber, a roofer, a health care worker, a teacher or any worker. Labor Day is a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. (U.S. Department of Labor)
Paul was not identified by just one part of his calling. We celebrate this weekend the laborer who is much more important than the work performed.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you.
