There is only one Teacher / Solo hay un maestro
Voy a presentar una clase para catequistas la próxima semana. He repasado algunas de las sesiones de formación que presenté hace quince años en Fresno. Es interesante repasar mis presentaciones cuando era director del Ministerio Campesino. Tendré que revisar parte de mi presentación, pero la siguiente reflexión sigue siendo valiosa.
Solo hay un maestro
“Ustedes me llaman: el Maestro y el Señor. Y dicen la verdad, pues lo soy. Si yo, siendo el Señor y el Maestro, les he lavado los pies, también ustedes deben lavarse los pies unos a otros.” (Jn. 13, 13-14)
Sólo hay un Maestro. Somos discípulos, pero solo hay un Maestro. Necesitamos aprender a dar testimonio de Cristo, lavando los pies de las personas que quieren conocer al Maestro, Jesús. Me doy cuenta de que me escuchas como un maestro, pero solo soy un hombre que camina con Jesús. Él es quien nos muestra el Camino. Muestra más que compromiso con los pobres. Él es el Hijo de Dios, mostrándonos cómo amar como Dios ama.
No les dio a los discípulos un catecismo. Las personas no son evangelizadas por la presentación de la catequesis o la doctrina. Las personas se convierten por el testimonio vivido de personas fieles. Una vez que uno experimenta la vida fiel, surge la curiosidad acerca de lo que motiva a las personas de buena fe. Es ese testimonio vivido el que evangeliza. Una vez evangelizado, uno quiere saber más sobre Dios, la fe y la Iglesia. La catequesis, las escrituras, la liturgia y la teología moral informan a la persona de fe.

I am to give a class for catechists next week. I have gone over some of training sessions that I presented fifteen years ago. It is interesting looking back at my presentations while I was director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno. I will have to update some of my presentation, but the following reflection is still of value.
There is only one Teacher
“You call me ‘teacher’ and ‘master,’ and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet.” (Jn 13: 13-14)
There is only one Teacher. We are disciples, but there is only one Master. We need to learn how to bear witness to Christ, washing the feet of people who want to know the Master, Jesus. I realize that you listen to me as a teacher, but I am only a man walking with Jesus. He is the one who shows us the Way. He shows more than commitment to the poor. He is God’s Son, showing us how to love as God loves.
He did not give the disciples a textbook or a catechism. People are not evangelized by the presentation of catechesis or doctrine. People are converted by the lived witness of faithful people. Once one experiences faithful living, there is a curiosity about what motivates people of good faith. It is that lived witness that evangelizes. Once evangelized, one wants to know more about God, faith and the Church. Catechesis, scripture, liturgy and moral theology inform the person of faith.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
