Ayer fue un buen día. Fue hermoso recibir felicitaciones de cumpleaños de tanta gente. Quiero que todos mis amigos, familiares y hermanos redentoristas, sepan mi gratitud y mis oraciones por todos ustedes. He estado escuchando la versión en audio de la autobiografía del Papa Francisco, “Esperanza”. Evidentemente, originalmente quería publicarla después de su muerte, pero al comienzo del Año Jubilar de la Esperanza, terminó el libro y lo publicó a principios de año. Luego enfermó, y debió publicarse poco antes de su muerte.
En el libro, habló mucho sobre recibir la fe en su familia. Recientemente me pidieron que hablara en un podcast sobre cómo experimenté el llamado a trabajar con inmigrantes. Comencé de manera similar a cómo Francisco habló de la importancia de su familia en el discernimiento de su vocación. Al preparar el podcast, este es el primer párrafo que escribí sobre la importancia de la familia, mi parroquia y mi escuela para discernir mi vocación:
Mi jornada de fe….inició en el ceno de una familia católica en Omaha, Nebraska en 1947. Me gusta decir que hubo tres pilares esenciales en mi formación: la familia, la fe y la parroquia Holy Name. La parroquia Holy Name era más que solamente una iglesia y una escuela. En Omaha, barrios se identificaban con las iglesias católicas. Era nuestro mundo. Hubo muchas vocaciones religiosas, tanto para hombres como para mujeres, iniciadas en la parroquia y la escuela. La parroquia estaba atendida por los Redentoristas y las Hermanas Servitas de María, y cuando los misioneros que servían en Brasil regresaron a visitar a sus familias, aprendí sobre las misiones en la selva. Parecía como una aventura. Entré al seminario redentorista para ver si podía ser misionero.
Supongo que algunos pueden criticar que la familia esté por encima de la fe, pero fue en la familia donde recibí mi fe. Fue agradable escuchar al Papa Francisco hablar de la bendición de crecer en una familia donde aprendió la fe.

Yesterday was a very good day. It was beautiful to receive Birthday wishes from so many people. I want all of my friends, relatives and confreres especially to know my gratitude and prayers for all of you. I have been listening to the audio version of Pope Francis autobiography, “Hope”. Evidently he originally wanted this to be published after he died, but at the beginning of the Jubilee year of Hope, he finished the book and he published it at the beginning of the year. Then he became ill, and it must have been published just before his death.
In it, he spoke much about receiving faith within his family. Recently I was asked to speak on a podcast of how I experienced the call to work with immigrants. I began in a similar manner to how Francis spoke of the importance of his family in his vocation discernment. In preparing for the podcast, here is the first paragraph that I wrote about the importance of family and my parish and school in discerning my vocation:
My faith journey…began in the midst of a Catholic family in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1947. I like to say there were three essential pillars in my formation: family, faith, and Holy Name. Holy Name Parish was more than just a church and a school. In Omaha, neighborhoods were identified by Catholic churches. It was our world. There were many religious vocations initiated in the parish and school. The parish was served by the Redemptorists and the Servants of Mary Sisters (Servites), and when missionaries serving in Brazil returned to visit their families, I learned about missions in the jungle. It seemed like an adventure. I entered the Redemptorist seminary to see if I could be a missionary.
I suppose some may find fault in putting family ahead of faith, but it was within the family that I received my faith. It was nice hearing Pope Francis addressed the blessing growing up in a family where he learned faith.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
