No más violencia contra los migrantes
¿Por qué se acepta hoy la retórica política maliciosa? Recibo emojis de agradecimiento por las publicaciones realizadas en los blogs del Padre Migrante, pero muchos correos electrónicos que recibo sobre el ministerio a los migrantes presentan preocupaciones sobre una “crisis en la frontera”. El odio de los racistas y admiradores de Donald Trump es aterrador. Sé que la mayoría de las personas que leen mis blogs son personas de buena voluntad, pero ¿por qué hay tanta disposición a aceptar la retórica del racismo, el miedo y la malevolencia? La verdadera crisis con respecto a la migración es nuestra falta de compasión, falta de generosidad, y falta de amor
La retórica maliciosa sobre los pobres y los migrantes no es nueva, pero ¿toleramos el odio de personas que son víctimas de abusos, delitos, gobiernos fallidos, injusticia económica y desastres naturales? ¿Por qué alguien escucha a Donald Trump? ¿Por qué empoderar a las personas odiosas que nos rodean? La violencia contra las víctimas del colapso social es intolerable. Necesitamos dejar de escuchar esa retórica.
La única solución a tal odio es el amor. El mensaje de Jesús no es de condenación, sin embargo, tenemos personas en el ministerio que no promueven el amor por los pobres, las víctimas de la injusticia y la violencia. Nuestra respuesta a la retórica política debe ser audaz y valiente. En Caritas in Veritate, el Papa Benedicto XVI dijo que la migración internacional “requiere políticas de cooperación internacional audaces y con visión de futuro”. Y el Papa Francisco llamó a todos los fieles a ser “audaces y creativos” en nuestra respuesta a las necesidades de los pobres.
Entiendo que la gente se estremezca ante la retórica política de hoy, pero peor es aceptar como verdaderas las distorsiones de la realidad en un lenguaje divisivo. Recuerde que en el juicio final, cuando las ovejas sean separadas de los cabritos, Jesús dirá: “Cuando era forastero, me recibieron en su casa”. Al menos eso es lo que esperamos escuchar.

Why is malicious political rhetoric accepted today? I receive appreciative emojis for postings made on Padre Migrante blogs, but too many emails that I receive about migrant ministry present worries about a “crisis at the border”. The raging hatred of racists, thugs and admirers of Donald Trump is frightening. I know that the majority of people reading my blogs are people of good will, but why is there so much willingness to accept the rhetoric of racism, fear and malevolence. The real crisis with regards to migration is our lack of compassion, lack of generosity, and lack of love.
Malicious rhetoric about the poor and the migrant is not new, but do we tolerate the villainization of people who are victims of abuse, crime, failed governments, economic injustice and natural disasters. Why does anyone listen to Donald Trump? Why empower the hateful people around us? Violence against the victims of societal breakdown is intolerable. We need to stop listening to such rhetoric.
The only resolution to such hatred is love. Jesus message is not one of condemnation, yet we have people in ministry failing to promote love of the poor, the victims of injustice and violence. Our response to the political rhetoric should be bold and courageous. In Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI said that international migration “requires bold, forward-looking policies of international cooperation.” And Pope Francis called on all faithful people to be “bold and creative” in our response to the needs of the poor.
I understand that people cringe at the political rhetoric of today’s politicians, but worse is accepting as true the distortions of reality in divisive language. Remember that in the final judgement, when the sheep are separated from the goats, Jesus will say, “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.” At least that is what we hope to hear.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
