Shout for joy, Jerusalem / Alégrate Jerusalén

Shout for joy, Jerusalem / Alégrate Jerusalén

Shout for joy, Jerusalem

Yesterday, we heard Zechariah say, “Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy.” There are so many times when beginning Mass, I want to wake people up to hear the Good News. We proclaim the gospel as “Good News”, but sometimes looking out into the pews, I wonder if anyone is hearing the message. Pope Francis says that we have too many “sourpusses” in our churches. It is important that we are have reverence on entering our worship space, but we need to do a better job of letting the joy of the gospel shine in us.

One Sunday at Mass during my first year of priesthood, we had an unusual occurrence. Sadly, our parish was not known for its singing. We had an enthusiastic youth choir, but the congregation rarely joined the singing. It was a beautiful morning, and as I walked into the church, I thought that I was in the wrong church. Everyone sang. We never sang so loud and so beautifully. When I got to the altar and saw everyone smiling. The joy of the community probably improved my homily. After Mass, several said, “What happened at Mass today? It was different.” It was a moment in time when it seemed that everyone came to church during a moment of joy. We all wanted to be there and could put aside all concerns and worries for the moment.

We all need moments when we can put all into God’s hands and enjoy the moment.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.

Come to me, all who labor / Vengan a mí los que están cansados Letter from Padre Migrante / Carta del Padre Migrante
