Buscando justicia para los migrantes

Cuando el Senado de los EE. UU. consideró la Ley de Reforma Integral de Inmigración, patrocinada por los senadores John McCain y Ted Kennedy en 2005, fue un momento de esperanza de que nuestro gobierno reformaría los procedimientos de inmigración y podríamos obtener una política de inmigración más ordenada y justa. En ese momento, la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos estableció la oficina de Justicia para Inmigrantes para abogar por los derechos de los migrantes. El proyecto de ley McCain-Kennedy fue debatido, enmendado muchas veces y, al final, nunca fue llevado al pleno del Senado para su votación. Desde entonces, la inmigración ha sido una parte explosiva de la política estadounidense, sin señales visibles de que algún político busque alguna reforma positiva.
Durante diecisiete años, la oficina de Justicia para Inmigrantes se ha esforzado por poner cara al tema de la inmigración. Desde que comenzamos nuestro estudio sobre los migrantes y los servicios para migrantes en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, amigos, familiares y personas interesadas en nuestro estudio me han hecho muchas preguntas. Solo hemos estado en este estudio durante dos meses, y es una lucha organizar información y nuestras experiencias. Parece que todo el mundo tiene una opinión, una teoría sobre la migración. Las opiniones van desde la compasión por los migrantes hasta el temor de lo que sucederá si se les permite ingresar a una comunidad. Las opiniones están llenas de pasión, verdades parciales y mucha desinformación.

Seeking justice for migrants
(Yesterday, I messed up the page and did not realize that I failed to attach the proper blog for the day. Forgive me. Here is the Blog, “Seeking Justice.”)
When the U.S. Senate considered the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act, sponsored by Senators John McCain and Ted Kennedy in 2005, it was a time of hope that our government would reform immigration procedures and we could gain a more orderly and fair immigration policy. At that time, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops established the office of Justice for Immigrants to advocate for the rights of migrants. The McCain-Kennedy bill was debated, amended many times and in the end, it was never taken to the floor of the Senate for a vote. Since that time, immigration has been an explosive part of U.S. politics, with no visible sign that any politician seeks any positive form of reform.
For seventeen years the Justice for Immigrants office has striven to put faces on the issue of immigration. They tell the stories of what is happening around the world, that pushes so many people to flee their countries of origin. Trying to bring truth to the forefront about immigration is a noble task, but it is difficult to present truth about migration in a world so polarized and politicizes. Misinformation, xenophobia, and fear blocks the presentation of truth and compassion. Migrants are often victims at home and victims abroad.
The Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo, Scalabrinianos, founded in Italy in 1887 to help immigrants and political refugees, are active around the world, working with migrants and refugees. Among their efforts to help migrants, they have centers for information on migration around the world. Their Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMSNY) offers studies of migration. Since beginning our study of migrants and migrant services on the U.S. – Mexico border, I have been asked many questions by friends, relatives and people interested in our study. We have only been on this study for two months, and it is a struggle to pull together information and our experiences. It seems that everyone has an opinion, a theory about migration. The opinions range from compassion for the migrants, to fear of what happens if migrants are allowed into a community. The opinions are filled with passion, partial truths and much misinformation.
One truth about migration is that global migration has been, is and will continue to rise. The access to transportation, continued global political tensions, climate change and the aspirations of people to realize hopes and dreams push many people to seek a better life somewhere away from where they live. It is part of the lore of every nation, including the dreams of all generations of Americans. Migration is a great sign of the value of life, liberty, hope and faith.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores.
