Ver el bien en todas las personas
Anteayer escribí sobre el P. Jimmy O’Connell, un redentorista legendario que trabaja en el ministerio con los trabajadores agrícolas inmigrantes. Se decía de él: “Tenía una cualidad infantil que le permitía ver lo bueno en todas las personas”. Sólo recientemente he llegado a desear esa virtud. Fue durante el COVID que me llamó la atención tal virtud. Un obispo me invitó a su diócesis para visitar sus comunidades rurales y ayudar a evaluar qué tan bien sus sacerdotes estaban satisfaciendo las necesidades de los inmigrantes en sus parroquias. La forma en que me presentó a sus sacerdotes facilitó mi trabajo.
Les dijo a los sacerdotes que me invitó para contarle qué cosas buenas estaban sucediendo en sus parroquias en el Ministerio Hispano, y luego sugerirles formas de hacerlo mejor. Fue una alegría salir a las parroquias con una actitud tan positiva. La gente responde bien a ese enfoque. Sacerdotes y líderes laicos me contaron con entusiasmo lo que estaban haciendo para que su parroquia fuera acogedora para la comunidad hispana que llegaba a sus comunidades. No sólo estaban orgullosos de lo que hacían, sino que querían hacerlo mejor.
Con demasiada frecuencia en la sociedad escuchamos malas noticias. El miedo, la ira y la confusión obstaculizan las buenas respuestas a los desafíos que nos rodean. El objetivo no es subestimar nuestros desafíos, sino reconocer lo bueno y encontrar respuestas positivas a los desafíos actuales.
Incluso cuando experimentamos dificultades, debemos reconocer la bondad que puede fortalecernos en tiempos difíciles. Que todos tengamos suficiente del P. Jimmy en nosotros para afrontar mejor nuestros tiempos difíciles.

Seeing good in all people
The day before yesterday, I wrote about Fr. Jimmy O’Connell, a legendary Redemptorist working in ministry with migrant farm workers. It was said of him, “He had a childlike quality about him that allowed him to see the good in all people.” Only recently have I come to want that virtue. It was during COVID that such virtue came to my attention. A Bishop invited me into his diocese to visit his rural communities to help evaluate how well his priests were meeting the needs of migrants in their parishes. The way that he introduced me to his priests made my work easy.
He told the priests that he invited me in to tell him what good things were happening in his parishes in Hispanic Ministry, and then to suggest ways of doing better. It was a joy to go out to the parishes with such a positive attitude. People respond well to such an approach. Priests and lay leaders eagerly told me about what they were doing to make their parish welcoming for the Hispanic community coming into their communities. They not only were proud of what they were doing, they wanted to do better.
Too often in society, we hear the bad news. Fear, anger and confusion hinder good responses to the challenges that are around us. The goal is not to underestimate our challenges, but to recognize the good, and to find positive responses to today’s challenges.
Even when experiencing difficulties, we need to recognize goodness that can bolster us in difficult times. May we all have enough of Fr. Jimmy in us to better face our challenging times.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
