Recordando mi primera misa
Hoy es la fiesta de los santos Pedro y Pablo. En el momento en que fui ordenado en 1973, esta fiesta se consideraba móvil y se trasladó al domingo siguiente al 29 de junio. Así que el 1 de julio celebré mi Misa de Acción de Gracias por haber sido ordenado sacerdote en la iglesia Holy Name en Omaha. Si bien era una costumbre Redentorista que otro sacerdote predicara en nuestra Primera Misa, mi primera opción, el P. Joe Ostrander me informó que le iban a operar la garganta dos semanas antes de mi Primera Misa y que no podría asistir a la Misa. Mi segunda opción me dijo que ya estaba comprometido a hablar ese día en el quincuagésimo aniversario de otro sacerdote. Decidí que daría la homilía yo mismo y, mirando hacia atrás, fue una oportunidad para hablar con muchas personas de mi familia y con muchos amigos.
Al momento de celebrar nuestra primera Misa, era costumbre hacer estampas sagradas para recordar la ocasión. Elegí una carta que era un poco controvertida. Mientras que muchos amigos tenían en sus tarjetas citas de las Escrituras, citas de grandes santos o partes de los documentos del Concilio Vaticano Segundo, yo tenía el dicho de un político aburrido. Decía: “No me gustaría haber vivido sin haber molestado a nadie”. En la misa hablé sobre el dicho.
Jesús perturbó a la gente, especialmente a los líderes religiosos de su tiempo. Nos mostró un Dios de misericordia, compasión, alegría y compañero de todas las personas. Caminó entre nosotros como amigo, compañero y guía. Perturbó a la gente mostrándonos un Dios al que no debemos temer, sino en el que podemos confiar para que siempre esté con nosotros en los buenos y en los difíciles. Quería que nos convirtiéramos en la mejor versión posible de nosotros mismos.
No intento molestar a la gente, pero las personas a las que amo y trato de servir se encuentran a menudo en la periferia de la sociedad y de la Iglesia. Son las condiciones de falta de vivienda, las adicciones, los problemas de salud, la pobreza, el racismo y la xenofobia las que deberían preocuparnos a todos. Si servir a personas con estos desafíos en la vida es inquietante, entonces eso es lo que espero hacer. Al leer las cartas de los santos Pablo y Pedro, debemos seguir a Jesús, aunque eso resulte perturbador para los demás. Sufrieron el martirio por unas enseñanzas que perturbaban a la sociedad y a los líderes religiosos de su época.

Remembering my First Mass
Today is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. At the time that I was ordained in 1973, this feast was considered moveable, and it was moved to the Sunday following June 29. So on July 1, I celebrated my Mass of Thanksgiving for being ordained a priest at Holy Name in Omaha. While it was a Redemptorist custom to have someone else preach at our First Mass, my first choice, Fr. Joe Ostrander informed me that he was to have throat surgery two weeks before my First Mass and would be unable to attend the Mass. My second choice told me that he was already committed to speak that day at the fiftieth anniversary of another confrere. I decided that I would give the homily myself, and looking back, it was an opportunity to speak to many people in my family and to many friends.
At the time of celebrating our first Mass, it was customary to have holy cards made to remember the occasion. I chose a card that was a bit controversial. While many friends had scripture quotes, quotes of great saints or parts of the documents of the Second Vatican Council on their cards, I had the saying of a stodgy politician. It said, “I wouldn’t like to have lived without ever having disturbed anyone.” At the Mass, I spoke about the saying.
Jesus disturbed people, especially the religious leaders of his time. He showed us a God of mercy, compassion, joy and a companion with all people. He walked among us as friend, companion and guide. He disturbed people by showing us a God not to be feared, but to be trusted to always be with us in good times and in difficult times. He wanted us to become the best versions of ourselves as possible.
I do not go about trying to disturb people, but the people whom I love and try to serve are often on the periphery of society and the Church. It is the conditions of homelessness, addictions, health challenges, poverty, racism and xenophobia that should disturb us all. If serving people with these challenges in life is disturbing, then that is what I hope to do. Reading the letters of Saints Paul and Peter, we need to follow Jesus, even if that is disturbing to others. They suffered martyrdom for teaching that disturbed society and religious leaders of their time.

Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
