Reconoció a Jesús en los marginados
El Papa Francisco conmovió a quienes han estado al margen de la Iglesia Católica. Incomodó y, a menudo, se enojó a los tradicionalistas. Fue esperanza para los desesperados y consuelo para los oprimidos. Bendijo a quienes atendían las necesidades de los pobres y a las víctimas de gobiernos fallidos. Dio esperanza a quienes sufrían pobreza, persecución y desastres.
De todos sus escritos desde que asumió el Papado, su exhortación apostólica, «La alegría del Evangelio», es la que más me llama la atención. Su reflexión sobre la opción preferencial de la Iglesia por los pobres reconoce no solo el cuidado físico que necesitan, sino también la necesidad de la bendición, la palabra y los sacramentos.
La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe. La opción preferencial por los pobres debe traducirse principalmente en una atención religiosa privilegiada y prioritaria. (EG. 200)
Al elegir la Iglesia un nuevo Papa, que el cuidado de los pobres y marginados siga siendo una prioridad para el próximo Papa.

Recognizing Jesus in the marginalized
Pope Francis touched the hearts of those who have been on the periphery of the Catholic Church. He made traditionalists uncomfortable, and often, resentful. He was hope for the hopeless and comfort for the oppressed. He blessed those serving the needs of the poor and victims of failing governments. He gave hope to those suffering from poverty, persecution and disasters.
Of all of his writings since he became Pope, it is his apostolic exhortation, “The Joy of the Gospel” that captures my attention most. His reflection on the Church’s preferential option for the poor recognizes not only the physical care needed by the poor, but the need for blessing, the word and sacrament.
The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith. Our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care. (EG. 200)
As the Church elects a new Pope, may care for the poor and the marginalized remain a focus for the next Pope.
