Reconociendo a Cristo entre nosotros
Cuando me piden que autografíe mi libro, suelo añadir: «Que todos reconozcan a Jesús en el migrante» antes de firmarlo. Los papas Juan Pablo II, Benedicto XVI y Francisco han expresado esta enseñanza. A menudo considero esta cita del papa Francisco de una homilía, «Libres del miedo» (15 de febrero de 2019).
«El encuentro con el otro es también un encuentro con Cristo. Es Él quien llama a nuestra puerta hambriento, sediento, forastero, desnudo, enfermo y encarcelado, pidiendo que lo encontremos y ayudemos… Si esta es una clave válida de lectura de nuestra historia actual, entonces deberíamos comenzar a dar las gracias a quien nos brinda la oportunidad de este encuentro, para encontrar, acoger y ayudar a Jesús en persona».
Él nos dice que debemos estar agradecidos con quienes nos dan la oportunidad de encontrarnos con Jesús. Quienes están en la periferia de nuestra sociedad pueden ser molestos, incómodos y, a veces, aterradores. A menudo, no podemos ayudar, pero al menos podemos evitar complicarles la vida a los pobres, a los migrantes y a los abandonados. El encarcelamiento, la deportación, la separación de los hijos y otras crueldades son difíciles de imaginar si realmente creemos que es Jesús llamando a nuestra puerta.

Recognizing Christ amongst us
When people ask me to autograph my book, I frequently add: “May all people recognize Jesus in the migrant” before signing the book. Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, have each expressed this teaching. I often consider this quote from Pope Francis from a homily, “Free from Fear”, (Feb. 15, 2019).
‘The encounter with others is also an encounter with Christ. It is He who knocks at our door, hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick, and imprisoned, asking us to encounter him and help him… If this is a valid key to reading our current history, then we should begin to give thanks to those who give us the opportunity for this encounter—to encounter, welcome, and help Jesus himself.’
He tells us that we should be grateful to those who give us the opportunity to encounter Jesus. Those who are on the periphery of our society can be annoying, inconvenient and at times frightening. Often, we may be unable to help, but we can at least avoid making things harder on the poor, the migrant, the abandoned. Incarceration, deportation, separation from children, and other cruelties are hard to imagine if we truly believe that it is Jesus knocking on our doors.

Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
