¡Viva la Virgen!
Celebremos hoy a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Mañana continuaré con mis reflexiones sobre la enseñanza papal sobre la migración. Hoy, todos debemos ser guadalupanos. Lo siguiente es parte de una declaración de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos para la festividad de hoy de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe:
“Aunque tan a menudo hacemos distinción de fronteras, razas, lenguajes, ideologías políticas y tantas otras fuentes posibles de división, el patrocinio de Nuestra Señora es un poderoso recordatorio de que todos estamos llamados a ser uno en Cristo Jesús, comenzando desde el momento de nuestra concepción. En este tiempo en que algunos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas sienten miedo y ansiedad, recordamos las eternas palabras de Nuestra Señora a San Juan Diego: ‘No temas ninguna enfermedad, ni aflicción, ni ansiedad, ni dolor. ¿No estoy yo aquí, yo que soy tu Madre? ¿No estás bajo mi sombra y protección?’
“A lo largo de la vida de nuestra nación, hemos visto en ocasiones manifestaciones inaceptables de prejuicio y odio, incluyendo en días recientes comunicaciones masivas dirigidas a personas de color y comentarios despectivos sobre las comunidades inmigrantes. Con una sola voz clara, reafirmamos nuestro reconocimiento inquebrantable e incondicional del hecho de que toda vida humana es sagrada y que Dios ha dotado a cada persona de una dignidad inviolable, que ningún poder terrenal puede negar. Las ideologías perversas del racismo y la xenofobia son antitéticas a estas enseñanzas fundamentales de nuestra fe cristiana. Ninguna persona formada y comprometida con el Evangelio de la Vida puede albergar tales puntos de vista con buena conciencia.”
La fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe honra a la Virgen como nuestra madre y nuestro ser de la misma familia. Necesitamos reconocer al migrante como nuestro hermano y hermana.

May we all celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe today. Tomorrow, I will continue my reflections on the Papal Teaching on Migration. Today, we all need to be Guadalupanos. The following is part of a statement from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for today’s Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe:
“Though we so often distinguish ourselves through borders, races, languages, political ideals, and so many other possible sources of division, Our Lady’s patronage is a powerful reminder that we are all called to be one in Christ Jesus, beginning from the moment of our conception. At this time, when some of our brothers and sisters are experiencing fear and anxiety, we are reminded of the abiding words of Our Lady to Saint Juan Diego: ‘Do not fear any illness or vexation, anxiety or pain. Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection?’”
“Throughout the life of our nation, we have seen at times unacceptable demonstrations of prejudice and hatred, including in recent days mass communications targeting people of color and disparaging comments about immigrant communities. With one clear voice, we reaffirm our unwavering and unqualified recognition of the fact that each and every human life is sacred, that all persons are imbued by God with an inviolable dignity, which no earthly power can deny. The sinful ideologies of racism and xenophobia are antithetical to these core teachings of our Christian faith. No person formed by and committed to the Gospel of Life can harbor such views in good conscience.”
The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe honors the Virgin as our mother and our being of the same family. We need to recognize the migrant as our brother and sister.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
