Por favor, no más guerra.
La respuesta a la injusticia no es la guerra. El resentimiento y el revivir constantemente nuestras heridas no nos dan un camino hacia la paz. Necesitamos escuchar las voces de la esperanza, que a menudo vivieron injusticias extremas. Las grandes voces por la paz alejan a sus seguidores del castigo y la venganza. Consideremos a Mahatma Gandhi, el Dr. Martin Luther King, César Chávez, Nelson Mandela, el Papa San Juan Pablo II y los mártires reconocidos y no reconocidos por la Iglesia que dieron su vida cuidando a las víctimas de la injusticia.
Recordemos a Jesús en la cruz diciendo: “Padre, perdónalos, no saben lo que hacen”. (Lc. 23:34) Tenemos enseñanzas en las Sagradas Escrituras que pueden guiarnos, pero también algunas que parecen apoyar la venganza. La respuesta del salmo de la misa de ayer puede ser interpretada de manera diferente por aquellos inclinados a “contraatacar”. La respuesta fue: “El Señor juzgará al mundo con justicia”. ¿Qué es la justicia de Dios? Los versos del salmo de la Misa fueron tomados de dos Salmos diferentes. Del Salmo 9:2, “Te alabaré, oh Señor, con todo mi corazón; contaré tus maravillas”. Y del Salmo 16:9, “Él juzga al mundo con justicia, gobierna a los pueblos con equidad”.
Honra el pasado, no lo revivas.
La venganza no es la respuesta a la injusticia. Es fácil honrar el bien del pasado y buscamos poner en práctica las buenas vidas de quienes nos precedieron. En cuanto a los errores, problemas e injusticias del pasado, no necesitamos revivir el dolor de esos acontecimientos. La respuesta a nuestras heridas hoy es buscar la paz verdadera. No cambiamos el pasado, pero honrar nuestro pasado no implica vengarnos y contraatacar. El Papa San Juan Pablo II habló de la respuesta del mundo al terrorismo después del 11 de septiembre de 2001 en su mensaje del 1 de enero de 2002. Si bien muchas personas en el mundo querían venganza y castigo para las naciones involucradas en los ataques, El Papa Juan Pablo II dijo: “No hay paz sin justicia ni justicia sin perdón”.
Mientras pedía moderación y perdón, se han hecho guerras en Irak y Afganistán para luchar contra las acciones de los terroristas. El giro hacia la violencia en lugar de la diplomacia marcó el comienzo de la respuesta política actual al terrorismo. No olvidemos el dolor de ayer por la escalada de violencia. Un amigo mío preguntó: “¿Qué sabe el Papa acerca de ser víctima?” No olvidemos que vivió la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la represión de Polonia por parte de la Rusia comunista y un intento de asesinato personal. Cuando dijo: “No hay paz sin justicia ni justicia sin perdón”, hizo un llamado al mundo a la no violencia.
Con la guerra en Ucrania y ahora una nueva guerra inminente en Israel y Palestina, necesitamos nuevas formas de respuesta. ¿Cuándo aprenderemos a orar: “Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen”?

Please, no more war
The answer to injustice is not war. Resentment and constant re-living our hurts do not give us a path to peace. We need to listen to the voices of hope, who often lived through extreme injustices. The great voices for peace steer their followers away from retribution and revenge. Consider Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, Pope St. John Paul II and the martyrs both recognized and unrecognize by the Church who gave their life in care for victims of injustice.
Let us recall Jesus on the cross saying, “Father forgive them, they know not what they do.” (Lk. 23:34) We have teachings in Sacred Scriptures that can guide us, but also some that sound supportive of revenge. The psalm response from yesterday’s Mass may be interpreted differently by those inclined to “fight back”. The response was, “The Lord will judge the world with justice.” What is the justice of God? The verses of the psalm at the Mass were taken from two different Psalms. From Psalm 9:2, “I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with all my heart; I will declare your wonderous deeds.” And from Psalm 16:9, “He judges the world with justice, he governs the peoples with equity.”
Honor the past, but do not re-live it
Vengeance is not the answer to injustice. It is easy to honor the good of the past, and we seek to put into practice the good lives of those who have gone before us. As for the errors, problems and injustices of the past, we do not need to re-live the pain of those events. Our response to our hurts today is to seek true peace. We do not change the past, but honoring our past does not take place in revenge and fighting back. Pope St. John Paul II spoke to the response of the world to terrorism in the wake of September 11, 2001 in his message for January 1, 2002. While many people of the world wanted revenge and punishment for the nations involved in the attacks, Pope John Paul II said, there is “No peace without Justice and no Justice without forgiveness.”
As he called for restraint and forgiveness, wars have been fought in Iraq and Afghanistan to fight back against the actions of terrorists. The turn to violence in place of diplomacy marked the beginning of today’s political response to terrorism. Do not forget yesterday’s hurt by escalating violence. A friend of mine asked, “What does the Pope know about being a victim?” Do not forget that he lived through World War II, the repression of Poland by communist Russia, and a personal assassination attempt. When he said, “There is no peace without justice and no justice without forgiveness,” he called on the world to non-violence.
With war in Ukraine and now a new war impending in Israel and Palestine, we need new ways of response. When will we learn to pray, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do”?
