Hoy, recordemos a personas de todas las naciones de la tierra reunidas en Jerusalén para escuchar a los Apóstoles, llenos del Espíritu proclamando la Buena Nueva. Oyeron a los Apóstoles hablarles en sus propios idiomas. No era una situación bilingüe repitiendo un mensaje una y otra vez en cada idioma, pero todos escucharon el mensaje en griego, latín, árabe, egipcio, sirio y muchos otros. El mensaje fue tan poderoso que 3.000 se unieron a los Apóstoles en el Bautismo y en la Fracción del Pan.
Es difícil imaginar la energía de ese momento. Hoy, después de dos años de pandemia, niveles crecientes de violencia en nuestras calles y en nuestras escuelas y lugares públicos, después de una polarización de la sociedad entre nosotros y ellos, Pentecostés es una señal de fe que el mundo necesita escuchar nuevamente. El testimonio de los Apóstoles y de los primeros creyentes hizo del día de la venida del Espíritu Santo un momento glorioso. Pero después de ese día, vivir fielmente fue tan difícil como siempre. La persecución de la Iglesia tuvo lugar en Jerusalén, alrededor de las naciones mediterráneas y, por supuesto, en Roma.
El Espíritu no sólo dio a los Discípulos el coraje de anunciar el evangelio, sino también de vivir el evangelio sacrificando hasta el martirio por la Buena Nueva. En Pentecostés vino gente de todo el mundo, regocijándose en el Espíritu Santo. Hoy, más que nunca, debemos comprometernos unos con otros como hermanas y hermanos para abordar las divisiones de nuestro mundo actual. Que el Espíritu Santo nos guíe a todos.

Today, let us remember people from all nations on earth gathering in Jerusalem to hear the Apostles, filled with the Spirit proclaiming the Good News. They heard the Apostles speaking to them in their own languages. It was not a bilingual situation repeating a message over and over in each language, but they all heard the message in Greek, Latin, Arabic, Egyptian, Syrian and many others. The message was so powerful that 3,000 joined the Apostles in Baptism and in the Breaking of Bread.
It is hard to imagine the energy of that moment. At this time, after two years of a pandemic, increasing levels of violence on our streets and in our schools and public places, after a polarization of society into us and them, Pentecost is a sign of faith that the world needs to hear again. The testimony of the Apostles and the early believers made the day of the coming of the Holy Spirit a glorious moment. But after that day, living faithfully was as difficult as ever. The persecution of the Church took place in Jerusalem, around the Mediterranean nations and of course in Rome.
The Spirit not only gave the Disciples the courage to proclaim the gospel, but also to live the gospel making sacrifices even to martyrdom for the Good News. At Pentecost people came from all over the world, rejoicing in the Holy Spirit. Today, as much as ever, we need to commit ourselves to one another as sisters and brothers in order to address the divisions of our world today. May the Holy Spirit guide us all.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
