Padre Migrante: Lack of spiritual attention – La falta de atención espiritual
Pregunta: El Papa Francisco dice que “la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. ¿Por qué diría eso?
Es muy acertado en su preocupación por la “falta de cuidado espiritual” de los pobres. Si bien los pobres tienen una gran fe, en muchas parroquias se enfrentan a graves obstáculos para recibir los sacramentos de la Iglesia. Después de preguntar a algunos migrantes qué más podía hacer por ellos, una mujer dijo: “No necesitamos que seas nuestro médico, abogado o trabajador social. Necesitamos que seas nuestro sacerdote”. Explicó que los migrantes tienen dificultades para que sus hijos reciban los sacramentos de la Primera Eucaristía y la Confirmación. Debido a la inestabilidad de sus vidas, a menudo no están presentes en una parroquia en los momentos en que tiene lugar la preparación sacramental. Muy pocas encuentran parroquias que ofrecen sacramentos a personas con necesidades especiales.
El Papa Francisco continuó en EG 200 diciendo: “La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe.” (EG 200)
Caminando con los pobres y los migrantes, he sido testigo de que es muy cierto que los pobres tienen una “especial apertura a la fe”. Es evidente de muchas formas. Los artículos de fe decoran sus coches. Los hogares están llenos de imágenes de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, cruces, rosarios, estatuas de santos y otros signos de fe. La gente quiere bendiciones para sus hijos, oraciones por sus seres queridos, bendiciones para sus automóviles, hogares y herramientas. Las frases religiosas entran en sus conversaciones, “si Dios quiere”. Si bien se muestra con frecuencia devoción y fe, muchos no han recibido su Primera Comunión. Aquellos que han recibido los sacramentos de la iniciación a menudo se sienten avergonzados por los predicadores que presentan una imagen dura de Dios y de la Iglesia.
El Papa Francisco da a los sacerdotes y líderes religiosos un mensaje importante, “necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos“. Que todos los líderes de la Iglesia busquen formas de ofrecer mejor la buena nueva de la salvación y acoger a los fieles en la gracia de los sacramentos.

Question: Pope Francis says, “the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” Why would he say that?
He is very accurate in his concern for the “lack of spiritual care” of the poor. While the poor have great faith, in many parishes they face grave obstacles in receiving the sacraments of the Church. After asking some migrants what more I could do for them, a woman said, “We do not need you to be our doctor, lawyer or social worker. We need you to be our priest.” She explained that the migrants have difficulty having their children receive the sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation. On account of the instability of their lives, they often are not present in a parish at times when sacramental preparation takes place. Very few find parishes that offer sacraments to people with special needs.
Pope Francis continued in EG 200 saying, “The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.” (EG 200)
Walking with the poor and the migrant, I have witnessed that it is very true that the poor have a “special openness to the faith.” It is apparent in many ways. Articles of faith decorate their cars. Homes are filled with images of Our Lady of Guadalupe, crosses, rosaries, statues of saints and other signs of faith. People want blessings of their children, prayers for their loved ones, blessings of their cars, homes and tools. Religious phrases enter many conversations, “si Dios quiere” (if God wills). While devotions and faith is frequently shown, many have not received their First Communion. Those who have received the sacraments of initiation often are shamed by preachers presenting a harsh image of God and of the Church.
Pope Francis gives priests and religious leaders an important message, “they need God and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments.” May all leaders of the Church seek ways to better offer the good news of salvation and welcome the faithful to the grace of the sacraments
