“Vayan y hagan discípulos”
Pregunta: “¿A quién quiere tocar?”
Cuando me hicieron la pregunta, “¿A quién quiere tocar?” La referencia fue al propósito del sitio web Padre Migrante. La pregunta es para todos los seguidores de la Buena Nueva de Jesús. Los redentoristas están llamados a “evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. Escuchamos a Jesús decir a sus apóstoles: “Vayan y hagan discípulos”. Ese es el significado de la evangelización. Es la misión de todos los seguidores de Jesús.
El Papa Francisco llama la atención sobre lo que no es la evangelización: La Iglesia no crece por proselitismo sino «por atracción» (EG. 15) La conversión por atracción ocurre cuando ponemos en acción las palabras de Jesús. Necesitamos aprender a amar como Jesús. Cuanto más nos parezcamos a Cristo en nuestras vidas, más atractiva será nuestra fe para los demás.
Uno de los problemas de los católicos es la falta de confianza no sólo en la bondad de la creación, sino en que nosotros mismos somos “buenos”, creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Necesitamos humildad, sabiendo que nuestra bondad es un reflejo de la bondad de Dios. No es algo que ganemos o poseamos en todo momento. Somos descendientes de Adán y Eva. Tenemos nuestras debilidades y defectos, pero el pecado solo nos llama a una mayor humildad. Necesitamos reconocer a Cristo dentro de nosotros, quien nos usa para “hacer discípulos”.
Cuando el Papa Francisco dice que la evangelización no es proselitismo, no quiere decir que sea pasivo. Se muestra amando activamente como ama Cristo. Uno de los momentos en que los jóvenes de Casa San Alfonso supieron que éramos genuinos en nuestro cuidado por ellos fue cuando un miembro del grupo fue arrestado y acusado de asalto. Sucedió que vio comenzar una pelea en un parque. Alguien estaba golpeando a una mujer. Cuando intervino, llegó la policía y lo acusó de agresión, dejando libre al otro hombre. Fueron muchos testigos que trataron de convencer a la policía de que era el otro hombre el que iniciaba la pelea y que arrestaron el inocente. Varios de los testigos acudieron a Casa San Alfonso para ayudar a su inocente amigo.
Fuimos a la audiencia de fianza. Pagamos el dinero de la fianza y conseguimos un abogado para el joven. Cuando su caso fue aclarado, más jóvenes confiaron en los “padres”. Ellos conocieron nuestro compromiso por nuestras acciones. Apoyar a los pobres en una situación difícil atrajo a otros a nuestro ministerio. Los jóvenes querían saber más sobre el motivo de nuestro compromiso con ellos. La acción hizo discípulos de los jóvenes.
Por favor, no confunda el énfasis en atraer personas a Jesús con negación de la importancia de ensayo o catequesis. La atracción cristiana por acciones de amor y compromiso conduce al deseo de comprender mejor quién está detrás de ese amor y compromiso. Poner la fe en acción invita a una mayor reflexión sobre las raíces de la fe.

“Go and make disciples”
Question: “Who do you want to reach?”
When I was asked the question, “Who do you want to reach?” The reference was to the purpose of the Padre Migrante website. The question is for all followers of the Good News of Jesus. Redemptorists are called to “evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” We hear Jesus tell his apostles, “Go and make disciples.” That is the meaning of evangelization. It is the mission of all the followers of Jesus.
Pope Francis calls attention to what evangelization is not: It is not by proselytizing that the Church grows, but “by attraction”. (EG. 15) Conversion by attraction happens when Christians put Jesus words into action. We need to learn to love like Jesus. The more we become like Christ in our lives, the more attractive our faith is to others.
One of the problems of Catholics is a lack of confidence in not only the goodness of creation, but that we ourselves are “good”, created in the image and likeness of God. We need humility, knowing that our goodness is a reflection of the goodness of God. It is not something that we earn or possess at all times. We are descendants of Adam and Eve. We have our weaknesses and flaws, but our sinfulness only calls us to greater humility. We need to recognize Christ within us, who uses us to “make disciples.”
When Pope Francis says that evangelization is not proselytization, he does not mean that it is passive. It is shown by actively loving as Christ loves. One of the moments when the youth of Casa San Alfonso knew that we were genuine in our care for them came when a member of the group was arrested and charged with assault. It happened that he saw a fight beginning in a park. Someone was beating a woman. When he intervened, the police came and accused him of assault, letting the other man go free. There were many witnesses who tried to convince the police that it was the other man began the fight and that they held the one trying to stop the fight. Several of the witnesses came to Casa San Alfonso to help their innocent friend.
We went to bail hearing. We put up the bail money and got the young man legal help. When his case was cleared, more young people trusted the “padres”. They knew our commitment to them by our actions. Standing with the poor in a difficult situation attracted others to our ministry. Youth wanted to know more about what motivated our commitment to them. Action made the youth disciples.
Please, do not confuse an emphasis on attracting people to Jesus, as denying the importance of teaching or catechesis. Christian attraction by actions of love and commitment leads to a desire to better understand who is behind that love and commitment. Putting faith into action invites greater reflection on the roots of faith.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you.
