Lecciones de inmigrantes en un centro de detención
Nuestra comunidad redentorista en Greenwood, MS de 2014 a 2019 celebró la misa en el Core Civic Correction Center en Tallahatchie, MS los viernes. En 2018, la prisión redujo su población criminal a la mitad y dedicó la otra mitad de la prisión a albergar a detenidos inmigrantes. Hubo un cambio constante en el lado de inmigración de la prisión, y no pudimos celebrar misa para los detenidos, pero pudimos visitar un dormitorio o dos de detenidos cada semana. Estábamos limitados en lo que podíamos hacer por los detenidos. Su gratitud por lo poco que pudimos hacer por ellos fue extremadamente humillante.
El paso de refugiados por refugios para migrantes, campamentos, centros de detención y la tramitación de sus casos lleva mucho tiempo. Las personas que vimos en este centro de detención abandonaron sus países de origen meses antes de llegar a esta etapa de su viaje de refugiados. Solo podíamos imaginar el dolor, la incertidumbre de sus vidas, la separación de sus familias, el descontrol de sus vidas que soportaron estos detenidos. Uno de los aspectos notables de conocer a estos hombres fue ver su resiliencia y paz.
Llamamos a los hombres de un dormitorio para ofrecer un momento de oración, y luego ofrecíamos una bendición individualmente a cada uno. Había de 80 a 150 en un dormitorio y casi todos se reunieron para la oración y la bendición. Los detenidos eran de todo el mundo. Por lo general, los católicos fueron los primeros en recibir una bendición, pero otros de religiones no cristianas también vinieron en busca de una bendición. Un día, le pregunté a un hombre sij por qué buscaba la bendición de un sacerdote católico. Él dijo: “Te respetamos como un hombre santo. Queremos la oración de un hombre santo”.
Con las crisis en todo el mundo que empujan a las personas a buscar refugio, vemos imágenes de personas desesperadas. El momento de ingresar a los centros de refugiados es solo el comienzo de un largo jornada para el migrante. Su jornada espiritual apenas comienza. Nuestras oraciones parecen ser tan pequeñas, pero un hombre sij creyó que mi oración era importante. Espero que Dios escuche mi pobre oración y la tuya por los migrantes que sufren en el mundo.

Lessons from an immigration detention center
Our Redemptorist community in Greenwood, MS from 2014 to 2019 celebrated Mass at the Core Civic Correction Center in Tallahatchie, MS on Fridays. In 2018, the prison reduced its criminal population by half and dedicated the other half of the prison to housing immigration detainees. There was a constant turnover on the immigration side of the prison, and we were not able to celebrate Mass for the detainees, but we could visit a unit or two of detainees each week. We were limited in what we could do for the detainees. Their gratitude for what little we could do for them was extremely humbling.
The passage of refugees through migrant shelters, camps, detention centers and the processing of their cases takes a long time. The people we saw in this detention center left their countries of origin months before arriving at this stage of their refugee journey. We could only imagine the pain, the uncertainty of their lives, the separation from their families, the lack of control of their lives that these detainees endured. One of the remarkable aspects of meeting these men, was seeing their resilience and peace.
We called the men of a unit to have a moment of prayer, and then we would offer a blessing individually to each one. There were from 80 to 150 in a dormitory unit and almost all came together for the prayer and blessing. The detainees were from all over the world. Usually, the Catholics came first for a blessing, but others of non-Christian religions also came for a blessing. One day, I asked a Sikh man why he sought the blessing of a Catholic priest. He said, “We respect you as a holy man. We want the prayer of a holy man.”
With crises around the world pushing people to seek refuge, we see images of desperate people. The moment of entering into refugee centers is just the start of a long journey for the migrant. Their spiritual journey is only beginning. Our prayers appear to be so little, but a Sikh man believed my prayer was important. I hope that God listens to my poor prayer and yours for the suffering migrants of the world.

We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
