Padre Migrante: 9/11
11 de septiembre
Esta semana ha sido difícil recordar el 11 de septiembre de 2001. Fue un día que cambió el mundo. El mismo día, fue un día de conmoción y tristeza. Gente heroica se apresuró a entrar en las torres para salvar a la gente. Nuestra nación estuvo en estado de shock durante varios días mientras los acontecimientos de ese día nos abrumaban. Nos detuvimos, rezamos y tratamos de comprender el momento.
Veinte años después, temía escribir mi blog para este día. Mi emoción esta semana es la tristeza, no solo por el recuerdo del pasado, sino también por nuestro tiempo presente. Nuestro mundo no se está recuperando de la tragedia del 11 de septiembre. Nuestro país no se está curando. Hay divisiones, racismo e ira que estaban ocultos antes del 11 de septiembre. Mi tristeza es por la desunión y disfunción de tantas partes de la sociedad. Una pandemia se apodera del mundo y no podemos abordar la crisis de hoy debido a las divisiones desenterradas en los eventos del 11 de septiembre. Esta tristeza se encuentra también dentro de la Iglesia, ya que la distorsión de la verdad, las mentiras y los prejuicios dividen los fundamentos religiosos del catolicismo, el cristianismo, el judaísmo y las creencias islámicas.
No hemos sido buenos siguiendo las enseñanzas de Jesús. “Cuando alguien te golpee [tu] mejilla derecha, vuélvele la otra también”. (Mt. 5:39) y “Ama a tus enemigos y ora por los que te persiguen”. (Mateo 5:44)
No hemos seguido la enseñanza del Papa Juan Pablo II, como dijo el 1 de enero de 2002: “No hay paz sin justicia, y no hay justicia sin perdón”. Estas palabras provienen de su propia experiencia personal de los eventos que siguieron a la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la ocupación de Polonia por la Unión Soviética. También modeló sus creencias cuando, después de recuperarse de un intento de asesinato, fue a visitar al hombre que le disparó en la cárcel. Cuando se le preguntó por qué visitó al hombre que le disparó, dijo que era para perdonarlo.
Que el Señor nos muestre a todos un camino para encontrar puntos en común con aquellos que no están de acuerdo con nosotros y nos insultan. La tristeza del 11 de septiembre y las divisiones en la sociedad y dentro de la Iglesia necesitan curación. Que seamos instrumentos de su paz.

It has been difficult this week remembering 9-11-2001. It was a day that changed the world. On the day itself, it was a day of shock and sadness. Heroic people rushed into the towers to get people to safety. Our nation was in shock for several days as the events of that day overwhelmed us. We stopped, we prayed, and we tried to understand the moment.
Twenty years later, I dreaded writing my blog for this day. My emotion this week is sadness, not just for the memory of the past, but sadness for our present time. Our world is not healing from the tragedy of 9/11. Our country is not healing. There are divisions, racism and anger that were hidden before 9/11. My sadness is for the disunity and disfunction of so many parts of society. A pandemic grips the world, and we cannot address the crisis of today because of the divisions unearthed in the events of 9/11. This sadness is found also within the Church as distortion of the truth, lies and prejudices divide the religious foundations of Catholicism, Christianity, Judaism and Islamic faiths.
We have not been good at following the teaching of Jesus. “When someone strikes you on [your] right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.” (Mt. 5:39) and “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Mt. 5:44)
We have not followed the teaching of Pope John Paul II, as he said on January 1, 2002: “There is no peace without justice, and there is no justice without forgiveness.” His words came from his own personal experience of the events following World War II and the occupation of Poland by the Soviet Union. He also modeled his beliefs when after he recuperated from an assassination attempt on his life, he went to visit the man who shot him in prison. When asked why he visited the man who shot him, he said it was to forgive him.
May the Lord show us all a way to find common ground with those who disagree with us and insult us. The sadness of 9/11 and the divisions in society and within the Church need healing. May we be instruments of His peace.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
