Método misionero
El sábado, el Papa Francisco se dirigió a la Asamblea General Anual de las Sociedades Misioneras Pontificias (PMS). Llamando la atención sobre la misión de la Iglesia, habló de tres características fundamentales de la misión de la Iglesia: comunión, creatividad y tenacidad. Dijo que la misión cristiana “no se trata de transmitir alguna verdad abstracta o convicción religiosa -necesitamos menos proselitismo- sino ante todo de permitir que aquellos que conocemos tengan una experiencia fundamental del amor de Dios.”
Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Ve y haz discípulos de todas las naciones.” Dar la bienvenida a las personas para que se conviertan en discípulos, hace que las personas entren en comunión con Jesús y la Iglesia. Los sacramentos son el signo de esa unión, “bautízalos”. Después de que las personas sean recibidas en el bautismo, “enséñales a observar todo lo que os he mandado”, es guía para una vida fiel.
Mirando hacia atrás en la historia de nuestra iniciativa juvenil, Casa San Alfonso (1991-1996), experimentamos la misión de la que Jesús habló en el evangelio de hoy. Introducimos a algunos jóvenes a la oración reflejando la metodología de un monasterio en Taizé, Francia. Los jóvenes comenzaron a invitar a amigos, familiares, compañeros de trabajo y otras personas. Después de la experiencia de oración, los recién llegados comenzaron a pasar tiempo con el grupo de jóvenes, participando en actividades del grupo parroquial y de la Casa. Los recién llegados, después de participar varias veces, fueron reconocidos por el grupo y les entregaron una cruz Redentorista. En los momentos de oración de Taizé, la gente anticipaba quién sería reconocido y le entregaban una cruz.
Todos los jóvenes que llegaban al grupo de jóvenes eran bautizados cuando eran bebés, pero para muchos recibir la cruz era una señal de iniciación al grupo de jóvenes. Tenía un significado sacramental para sus vidas. Después de recibir la cruz, los jóvenes se tomaron más en serio su fe. Querían saber más al respecto. Querían compartir su experiencia de fe con los demás y aprender lo que otros estaban aprendiendo.
El mensaje del Papa Francisco del sábado fue con visión de futuro, en lugar de buscar reestructurar nuestra Iglesia. Pidió un compromiso renovado con la misión de la Iglesia: “Ve, haz discípulos de todas las naciones.” Recordar a nuestro grupo de oración de Taizé trae buenos recuerdos. Fue una introducción para los jóvenes que llegaron al discipulado. Fue un método que sirvió y perdió energía durante varios años. La cuestión no es recrear buenas obras del pasado, sino estar abierto a formas nuevas y creativas de presentar el mensaje de Jesús. Sal con celo misionero y deja que el Espíritu haga lo que quiera, y no te desanimes.

Missionary method
On Saturday, Pope Francis addressed the Annual General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS). Calling attention to the mission of the Church, he spoke of three fundamental characteristics of the Church’s mission: communion, creativity and tenacity. He said that the Christian mission “is not about transmitting some abstract truth or religious conviction – we need less proselytizing – but first and foremost is for enabling those we meet to have a fundamental experience of God’s love.”
Jesus told his disciples, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” Welcoming people to become disciples, brings people into communion with Jesus and the Church. The sacraments are the sign of that union, “baptize them”. After people are received in Baptism, “teach them to observe all that I have commanded you,” is guidance for faithful living.
Looking back on the history of our youth initiative, Casa San Alfonso (1991-1996), we experienced the mission that Jesus spoke of in today’s gospel. We introduced a few young people to prayer reflecting the methodology of a monastery in Taize, France. The young people began to invite friends, relatives, coworkers and others. After the prayer experience newcomers began hanging out with the youth group, participating in activities of the parish group and of the Casa. Newcomers after participating a few times were recognized by the group and presented a Redemptorist cross. At Taize prayer times, people anticipated who would be recognized and presented a cross.
All of the young people coming to the youth group were baptized as infants, but for many receiving the cross was a sign of initiation into the youth group. It was sacramental in significance for their lives. After receiving the cross, the young people took their faith more seriously. They wanted to know more about it. They wanted to share their experience of faith with others and to learn what others were learning.
Pope Francis message on Saturday was forward looking, rather than seeking to restructure our Church. He called for renewed commitment to the mission of the Church, “Go, make disciples of all nations.” Remembering our Taizé prayer group, brings up fond memories. It was an introduction for the youth who came to discipleship. It was a method that served, and lost energy over several years. The point is not to recreate past good works, but to be open to new and creative ways of presenting the message of Jesus. Go out with missionary zeal and let the Spirit do what it will, and don’t get discouraged.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
