¿Quién sufre daño por la división en la Iglesia?
La Constitución Redentorista # 3 ha sido parte de nuestra comunidad desde la época de San Alfonso. Los peores críticos de San Alfonso fueron los jansenistas, conocidos como “rigoristas”. Su énfasis en la formación de la conciencia y el perdón de los pecados llevó a sus críticos a llamarlo “laxista”. Los jesuitas también fueron considerados “laxistas”. Es difícil pensar en San Alfonso como “laxista”, especialmente considerando sus propias luchas con la escrupulosidad.
Siempre ha habido división dentro de las comunidades religiosas. Los fariseos eran los rigoristas de la época de Jesús en el judaísmo y los saduceos eran los laxistas. Los fariseos se escandalizaron de que Jesús “comiera y bebiera con los pecadores”. Crucificaron a Jesús por enseñar el amor y la misericordia de Dios. San Pablo defiende su evangelización de los gentiles contra los que exigen la circuncisión de los conversos a la Iglesia. Alfonso veía a los incultos en la fe como los más abandonados y nos llamó a buscar a los que el ministerio ordinario de la Iglesia ignoraba. El Papa Francisco lamenta la falta de cuidado que la Iglesia da a los de la periferia, los pobres. Escribe: “Quiero expresar, con dolor, que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. (EG. 200)
Trabajando con personas al margen de la Iglesia es un ministerio privilegiado. Es interesante la cantidad de personas que admiran nuestro trabajo con migrantes, inmigrantes y refugiados. Eso es especialmente cierto en el trabajo con niños. La gente alaba visitas a las cárceles y celebraciones de misa por los detenidos y presos. Ofrecer refugio a las personas sin hogar gana elogios cívicos, especialmente si los pobres no están en las esquinas o durmiendo en nuestras puertas. Todas las obras corporales de misericordia son admiradas.
Mientras alaban las obras corporales de misericordia de la Iglesia, hay elementos divisivos en la Iglesia que se niegan a acoger a los marginados a la comunión con el pueblo de Dios en nuestras iglesias. La acusación es que compartir con los pecadores la Eucaristía es lo mismo que justificar el pecado. El perdón y la compasión no justifican el pecado, lo quitan. Jesús no creó una jerarquía de creyentes. La mujer samaritana, la adúltera, el ladrón en la cruz, el recaudador de impuestos, los ciegos, los cojos, los niños, las viudas, los no creyentes fueron todos tratados con dignidad y amor por Jesús.
Cuando la gente buscaba condenar y castigar a la mujer sorprendida en adulterio, Jesús dibujó en la arena. Cuando todos se fueron, él le preguntó: “Nadie te ha condenado”. Ella respondió: “Nadie, señor”. Él dijo: “Ni yo te condeno tampoco”.
Oren para que nosotros misioneros redentoristas respondamos fielmente a nuestra Constitución # 3:
“Los más abandonados, a los que la Congregación es enviada de modo especial, son aquellos a quienes la Iglesia no ha podido proporcionar aún medios suficientes de salvación; los que nunca oyeron el mensaje de la Iglesia o no lo aceptan al menos como buena nueva, y finalmente aquellos a quienes perjudica la división de la Iglesia”. (C.SS.R. Const. 3)

Who suffers harm from division in the Church?
Our Redemptorist Constitution #3 has been part of our Redemptorist community since the time of St. Alphonsus. The worst critics of St. Alphonsus were the Jansenists, known as “rigorists”. His emphasis on the formation of conscience and the forgiveness of sin led to his critics calling him a “laxist”. Jesuits also were called “laxists”. It is difficult to think of St. Alphonsus as a “laxist”, especially considering his own struggles with scrupulosity.
There has always been division within religious communities. The Pharisees were the rigorists of Jesus time in Judaism and the Sadducees were the laxists. The Pharisees were scandalized that Jesus “ate and drank with sinners.” They crucified Jesus for teaching the love and mercy of God. St. Paul defends his evangelization of the Gentiles against those demanding circumcision of converts to the Church. Alphonsus saw those uneducated in the faith as the most abandoned, and called us to seek out those who the ordinary ministry of the Church ignored. Pope Francis bemoans the lack of care that the Church gives to those on the periphery, the poor. He writes: “I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” (EG. 200)
It is a privilege offer ministry to people on the margins of the Church. It is interesting how many people admire our work with migrants, immigrants and refugees. That is especially true in working with children. People praise visiting prisons and saying Mass for detainees and inmates. Offering shelter for the homeless gains civic praise, especially if the poor are not on street corners or sleeping in our doorways. All of the corporal works of mercy gain admiration.
While praising the Church´s corporal works of mercy, there are divisive elements in the Church who refuse to welcome the marginalized to communion with the people of God in our churches. The accusation is that sharing with sinners the Eucharist is the same as justifying the sin. Forgiveness and compassion do not justify sin, they take it away. Jesus did not create a hierarchy of believers. The Samaritan woman, the adulteress, the thief on the cross, the tax collector, the blind, the lame, the children, the widows, the non-believers were all treated with dignity and love by Jesus.
When people sought to condemn and punish the woman caught in adultery, Jesus drew in the sand. When all left, he asked her, “Has no one condemned you.” She responded: “No one, sir.” He said, “Nor do I condemn you.”
Pray that our Redemptorist missionaries faithfully respond to our Constitution #3:
“The most abandoned, to whom in particular the Congregation is sent, are those for whom the Church has not yet been able to provide sufficient means of salvation, those who have never heard the Church’s message, or at least do not receive it as the “Good News”, and finally those who suffer harm because of division in the Church.” (C.SS.R. Const. 3)

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you.
