Mission Appeal / Llamado misionero

Llamado misionero

Mission Appeal

Today, I am preaching for our Redemptorist foreign missions. As I prepared for this day, there is a good second reading for the Mass that may be highlighted for a mission appeal. Paul writes of the early Christian community in 1 Corinthians,

Whoever had much did not have more,
and whoever had little did not have less
.

What a beautiful way to consider the life of the faithful. Paul says of Jesus that though “he was rich”, he became poor for us. He came to show us the love of God, not because we merited his love, but he loved us anyway.

Our generosity for impoverished people helps missionaries take the message of God’s love to people on the periphery of society and even of the Church. As a child, hearing stories of missionaries from our missions in Brazil moved me to become a Redemptorist. For many years, I spoke of our confreres in the foreign missionaries as the true missionaries. But when I was vocation director, I began to identify myself as a Redemptorist missionary. People sometimes ask, where did you serve as a missionary, thinking that the true missionary went to a foreign country, but I realized that being a missionary was for all of us. As a vocation director, I was supporting those who went to Brazil or Nigeria by promoting our vocation for missionaries to continue caring for the missions.

All those who pray and sacrifice to make it possible for missionaries to go on foreign missions are also missionaries. While I speak about our missionaries in Brazil and Nigeria, all of you can also support the missions in your prayers and sacrifices.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
