Centros de Servicios para Migrantes
Esta semana, el p. Leonardo Moctezuma Mora y yo comenzamos a visitar más centros de servicios al migrante en México. Hemos visitado unos centros en la región central de México en la Ciudad de México y en San Luis Potosí. Visitamos varios en Tijuana, Mexicali y Nogales. Planeamos visitar centros en Torreón, Saltillo y Monterey que están en el Norte de México. Estas son varias horas desde la frontera. Luego visitaremos Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa y Matamoros en la frontera.
En las visitas, hasta el momento, nos hemos encontrado con muchos profesionales y voluntarios dedicados en los centros. En muchos centros, los voluntarios a menudo son migrantes. Cocinan, limpian y cuidan a los migrantes. Algunos son ellos mismos, solicitantes de asilo con experiencia en servicio social y medical, educación y más. Es impresionante ver la atención que brindan quienes esperan que sus casos sean atendidos por los tribunales estadounidenses.
Los centros varían en los servicios que se ofrecen. Algunos tienen presupuestos muy limitados. Hay algunos con capacidad para cien invitados o más, pero la mayoría de los refugios son mucho más limitados. Algunas de las condiciones son difíciles. En algunos centros se brinda información sobre los servicios disponibles a los migrantes en todo México.
Información de la Cruz Roja:
En un mapa entregado por Cruz Roja a los migrantes, hay 104 centros de atención a migrantes en México. Estos incluyen: albergues, comedores y centros de servicio en todo México. Algunos de estos brindan servicios: incluidos alimentos, asistencia médica, servicios legales y sociales, cuidado de niños, incluidas las escuelas. En el mapa indica: 50 centros asistenciales en el norte de México (37 están cerca de la frontera), 25 centros en el centro del país y 29 en el sur del país. En Guatemala hay ocho sitios. En Honduras hay dos más.
Esta lista no esta completa. Hubo algunos que encontramos cerrados o se han mudado. En Nogales, no estaban en la lista dos de los más impresionantes, Iniciativa Kino y Casa Misericordia. Supimos de uno más en Nogales (un frente del crimen organizado) que tampoco estaba en la lista.
Desinformación y peligros:
La atención brindada por personas dedicadas a lo largo del viaje migratorio es admirable y limitada. No sabemos cuántos migrantes no pueden acceder a los servicios que están disponibles. Hay muchos migrantes que descubren que sus sueños no son alcanzables. Algunos regresan a su comunidad de origen, algunos buscan la vida en México y demasiados terminan siguiendo a personas que les prometen pasaje a Estados Unidos por otros medios. Cuando uno se confía a los traficantes del crimen organizado para cruzar la frontera, se arriesga no sólo a los peligros del cruce, sino al secuestro, abuso, extorsión y muerte.
Que todo el mundo busque la paz para los migrantes:
Ore por los Migrantes, los cuidadores y para que los líderes gubernamentales de todas las naciones del mundo se comprometan a brindar seguridad y esperanza a quienes anhelan la vida, la libertad y la paz. La migración es una preocupación global y nos exige a todos cuidar de nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

Migrant Service Centers
This week, Fr. Leonardo Moctezuma Mora and I begin visiting more migrant service centers in Mexico. We have visited a few centers in the central region of México in Mexico City and in San Luis Potosi. We visited several in Tijuana, Mexicali and Nogales. We plan to visit centers in Torreon, Saltillo and Monterey that are in the North of Mexico. These are several hours from the border. Then we will visit Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Matamoros on the border.
On the visits, so far, we have met many dedicated professionals and volunteers working in the centers. In many of the centers, volunteers often are themselves part of the migrant community. They cook, clean, and care for the migrants. Some are themselves, asylum seekers who are experienced in trades, care for the sick, education and more. It impressive seeing the care given by those waiting for attention to their cases being heard by American courts.
The centers vary in the services that are offered. Some are on very limited budgets. There are a few with capacity for a hundred guests or more, but most shelters are much more limited. Some of the conditions are very difficult. At some centers, there is information given freely to migrants about services available to migrants throughout Mexico.
Information from the Red Cross:
On a map given by the Red Cross to migrants, there are 104 assistance centers for migrants in Mexico. These include: shelters, food services, and service centers throughout Mexico. Some of these provide services: including food, medical assistance, legal and social service, child care including schools. On the map, it indicates: 50 assistance centers in the north of Mexico (37 are near the border), 25 centers in the middle of the country, and 29 in the south of the country. In Guatemala, there are eight sites. In Honduras, there are two more.
This list is not complete. There were some that we found closed or have moved. In Nogales, not on the list were two of the most impressive, Kino Initiative and Casa Misericordia. We heard of one more in Nogales (an organized crime front) that was not on the list as well.
Misinformation and dangers:
The care given by dedicated people all along the migrant journey is both admirable and limited. We do not know how many migrants are unable to access the services that are available. There are many migrants who discover that their migrant dreams are not attainable. Many return to their community of origin, some seek life in Mexico, and too many end up following people who promise them passage to the United States through other means. When one trusts themselves to the elements of organized crime to cross the border, they risk not only the dangers of crossing, but sequestration, abuse, extorsion and death.
May all people seek peace for migrants:
Pray for the Migrants, the care givers and that government leaders from all nations of the world engage in providing safety, security and hope for who yearn for life, freedom and peace. Migration is a global concern, and it takes all of us to care for our brothers and sisters.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo.
