Conociendo buena gente
¡Qué gran fin de semana! La Costa Este de Virginia es una península de setenta millas de largo separada del resto del estado por la bahía de Chesapeake. Hace diez días, vine a visitar al equipo del Ministerio Migrante de la Costa Este. Lo más destacado de mi viaje llegó el fin de semana del 22 al 23 de abril. El sábado por la mañana treinta y un niños recibieron su Primera Comunión.
En la tarde, una parte sorpresa de mi viaje a Virginia sucedió cuando un grupo de estudiantes y maestros de las Universidades de Virginia Tech, Florida y Ole Miss entrevistaron al Ministerio Migrante de la Costa Este y trabajadores agrícolas migrantes como un proyecto de investigación del “Centro de Historia Oral”. Las entrevistas fueron para proporcionar material de archivo para los estudiantes que realizan investigaciones sobre cultura, inmigración, migración, historia, etc. Me incluyeron en la entrevista para una perspectiva nacional. Hicieron de quince a veinte entrevistas.
Por la noche celebramos Misa en un campamento de migrantes que comenzaba a recibir trabajadores H-2A de México. El domingo, después de las misas regulares en dos iglesias, celebramos misa en otro campamento de migrantes. Las Misas en los campamentos fueron las primeras celebraciones con trabajadores temporales en este tiempo. La gran mayoría de la mano de obra estacional son hombres provenientes de México, Centroamérica y el Caribe, especialmente Haití.
Mientras reflexiono sobre el fin de semana, conocí a mucha buena gente. Los niños estaban alegres al participar en el sacramento de la Eucaristía. Los orgullosos padres y familias hicieron del día de sus hijos una celebración. Fue tan refrescante conocer a los estudiantes y maestros de grandes universidades que buscan comprender la vida de los trabajadores que proporcionan alimentos para los Estados Unidos y el mundo, registrando este momento en Virginia y la historia estadounidense.
Fue tan bueno celebrar Misa una vez más con trabajadores migrantes y voluntarios en el campo. Los hombres que participaron en la Misa fueron muy reverentes y agradecidos. Son hombres, “sal de la tierra”, separados de sus familias y seres queridos durante ocho meses para que puedan proporcionar los fondos necesarios para la vida en las comunidades empobrecidas del mundo.
En lugar de enfocarnos en los desafíos de nuestro tiempo, las divisiones políticas, las divisiones religiosas, es bueno reconocer a las buenas personas que nos rodean. Realmente estamos rodeados de buena gente. Si los reconocemos, nuestro mundo será un lugar mejor.

Meeting good people
What a great weekend! The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a seventy-mile-long peninsula separated from the rest of the state by the Chesapeake Bay. Ten days ago, I came to visit the Eastern Shore Migrant Ministry team. The highlight of my trip came on the weekend of April 22-23. On Saturday morning thirty-one children received their First Communion.
In the afternoon, a surprise part of my trip to Virginia happened as a group of students and teachers from the Universities of Virginia Tech, Florida and Ole Miss interviewed the Eastern Shore Migrant Ministry and migrant farmworkers as a research project of the “Center for Oral History”. The interviews were to provide archival material for students doing research on culture, immigration, migration, history, etc. I was included in the interview for a national perspective. They did fifteen to twenty interviews.
In the evening we celebrated Mass in a migrant camp that was beginning to receive H-2A workers from Mexico. On Sunday after regular Masses in two churches, we celebrated Mass in another migrant camp. The Masses at the migrant camps and the first celebrations of Mass were with seasonal workers at this time. The great majority of the seasonal workforce are men coming from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, especially Haiti.
As I reflect on the weekend, I met so many good people. The children were joyful as they took part in the sacrament of Eucharist. The proud parents and families made their children’s day a celebration. It was so refreshing to meet the students and teachers from great universities seeking understanding of the lives of workers providing food for the United States and the world recording this moment in Virginia and American history.
It was so good to once again to celebrate Mass with migrant workers and volunteers in ministry in migrant camps. The men who participated in the Mass were so reverent and grateful. They are “salt of the earth” men, separated from their families and loved ones for eight months so that they can provide need funds for life in impoverished communities of the world.
Instead of focusing of challenges of our times, our political divisions, our religious divisions, it is good to recognize the good people around us. We are truly surrounded by good people. If we recognize them, our world will be a better place.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
