Meeting a Lutheran pastor in Mexico

Fifteen years ago, I had an interesting meeting with a Lutheran missionary. He was in a small border town along the Mexico Arizona border. It was Holy Week. There was a Catholic church in the town, but Mass was only offered once a week by a priest from over fifty miles away. No Masses were celebrated on Sundays and the town did not have a priest celebrate Holy Week services for ten years.

We had a small crowd for Mass on Palm Sunday. We offered a children’s program during Holy Week. Youth of the town helped with the children and prepared for living stations of the cross on Good Friday. Participation at our services increased as the week went on.

On Saturday morning I had a nice visit with the Lutheran missionary. We discovered that we were the same age and went to college in Wisconsin. He attended Concordia College. I told him that we played them in soccer. When I told him that I attended Holy Redeemer College, he said, “Oh, you killed us.” He played defense and I was on offense.

I asked how he was doing on his mission, he replied, “Pretty well until you came.” He said that normally he had 200 people attend his Holy Thursday service. While we had 250 that night, he had 25. He laughed that his conversion of people to Lutheranism may not have been as complete as he thought. In a community of 500 people, the denomination of Christianity present is not so important as the simple presence of a man of God. I thanked him for serving the Catholic community there in the absence of a Catholic priest.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
