Lesson from an Uber driver

On Sunday, in the second reading for the Mass, Peter says: “If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God.”  And: “When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly.”

I have a few friends who drive for Uber or Lyft. They tell me that it the best part of the job is meeting interesting people as customers. Often, they delight in meeting people from other parts of the world and from interesting walks of life. Taking up on their comments, I enjoy engaging the drivers whom I have met on my infrequent but enjoyable experiences with Uber. Recently, my driver spoke of having had an accident with a drunk driver. He nearly died in the accident and had a very long recovery period and only was beginning to drive again.

He spoke about lessons in life learned by his accident. He gave testimony to the value of learning from his suffering. As he drove away, I said a prayer not only for him, but for the man who hit him. I am certain that is what the Uber driver would have wanted. He was not speaking of suffering patiently as a preacher, but he witnessed the message of Peter, “If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
