Corderos entre lobos
Jesús no envió a los Discípulos a hacer el “ministerio ordinario”. Los envió como “corderos entre lobos”, sin dinero, sin muda de ropa y sin sandalias. Se les dijo que “sanen a los enfermos” y anunciaran que “el reino de Dios ha venido a ustedes”. (Lc 10: 1-12) Fueron enviados a preparar el camino para que Jesús entrara en aquellos pueblos. Los fariseos enseñaron a la gente a ser obediente a la Ley de Dios. Jesús enseñó a la gente a amar a Dios y a amarse unos a otros.
En esta imagen, los discípulos deben llegar a ser como los “Corderos”. Como los corderos, no debían tener dinero, ni muda de ropa, ni sandalias. ¿Quiénes son los lobos? Son los fariseos, los escribas, los intérpretes de la ley. Recuerdo mi año sabático recogiendo cerezas y viviendo con los trabajadores agrícolas. Podría caminar con ellos y, con suerte, podría llegar a ser como ellos. Pero ellos eran los verdaderos corderos, luchaban por sobrevivir, cuidaban a sus hijos y aceptaban el maltrato por ser inmigrantes. Podría trabajar por la justicia para los migrantes, pero tuve que reconocer humildemente que soy menos que los “corderos”, los migrantes.
A menudo he escrito sobre la última conversación del obispo John Steinbock con sus sacerdotes. Habló de las personas sin hogar, los trabajadores migrantes, los prisioneros y los pobres como los amados de Jesús. Nos recordó que debíamos servirles, no mandarles. Unos meses después del discurso del obispo Steinbock, el Papa Benedicto XVI escribió que debemos “proponer en lugar de imponer” la enseñanza de Jesús a los pobres. (Verbum Domino, 105)

Lambs among wolves
Jesus did not send the Disciples to do “ordinary ministry”. He sent them out like “lambs among wolves”, with no money bag, no change of clothes, and no sandals. They were told to “cure the sick” and announce that, “The kingdom of God is at hand.” (Lk 10: 1-12) They were sent out to prepare the way for Jesus to enter those villages. The Pharisees taught people to be obedient to the Law of God. Jesus taught people to love God and to love one another.
In this image, the disciples must become like the “Lambs”. Like the lambs they were to have no money, no change of clothes, no sandals. Who are the wolves? They are the Pharisees, the Scribes, the interpreters of the Law. I remember my sabbatical picking cherries and living with the farmworkers. I could walk with them, and hopefully, I could become like them. But they were the real lambs, struggling for survival, caring for their children, accepting mistreatment because they were migrants. I could work for justice for the migrants, but I had to humbly recognize that I am less than the “lambs”, the migrants.
I have often written about Bishop John Steinbock’s last talk with his priests. He spoke about the homeless, the migrant worker, the prisoner and the poor as the beloved of Jesus. He reminded us that we were to serve them, not command them. A few months after Bishop Steinbock’s talk, Pope Benedict XVI wrote that we are to “propose rather than impose” the teaching of Jesus on the poor. (Verbum Domino, 105)
All who have a responsibility to teach the faith, need to remember to be like lambs.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
