Día del Trabajo
El Día del Trabajo es una festividad que celebra a las clases trabajadoras de la sociedad. Reconoce los desafíos de las negociaciones entre obreros y empleadores. Si bien las negociaciones pueden ser tensas y difíciles, una buena relación entre obreros y empleadores se basa en el respeto mutuo, la integridad y la voluntad de encontrar puntos en común. Como he trabajado y caminado junto a obreros más que con agricultores y empleadores, reconozco que no puedo tomar partido ni por un lado ni por el otro. Los empleadores y los empleados son hermanos y hermanas. Como miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, buscamos el bien de “todos”. Hoy, invito a todos a considerar las buenas relaciones entre empleadores y empleados.
Un dueño me invitó a su planta procesadora de alimentos. El dueño y unos 25 empleados me visitaron y se elogiaron tanto que quise conocer a los empleados fuera del entorno laboral y lejos de su jefe. Encontré a cuatro empleados fuera de una tienda de comestibles. Estaban igual de entusiasmados por hablar de su jefe y de la planta. Un hombre dijo que su hijo tuvo un accidente y necesitaba fisioterapia tres días a la semana. Al padre le dieron tres horas libres para llevar a su hijo a terapia, y le pagaron su salario regular por el tiempo que lo llevó.
Salí a caminar con un organizador sindical y un granjero. Después de un rato, les dije: “Se llevan bien. ¿Siempre son tan amigables?”. Uno dijo: “Nunca dejamos que nuestro trabajo interfiera en nuestra amistad”. El otro dijo: “Si lo hiciéramos, nuestras esposas se divorciarían de ambos. Son mejores amigas”.
Sabemos que las negociaciones entre empleadores y empleados pueden ser complicadas, pero escuchar, dialogar y discernir no solo es posible, sino esencial para la paz y la alegría. Que todos estemos dispuestos a acompañarnos mutuamente en el homenaje a los trabajadores, sea cual sea su labor.

Labor Day
Labor Day is a holiday that celebrates the laboring classes in society. It recognizes the challenges of negotiations between laborers and employers. While the negotiations may be tense and difficult, good relationship between laborers and employers is based on mutual respect, integrity and a willingness to find common ground. As I have worked and walked alongside laborers more than growers and employers, I recognize that I cannot take one side or another. The employers and the employees are all brothers and sisters. As members of the Body of Christ, we seek the good of “all” people. Today, I invite people to consider good employer/employee relationships.
An owner invited me to his food processing plant. The owner and bout 25 employees visited with me and praised each other so much that I wanted to meet employees outside the work environment and away from their boss. I met four employees outside a grocery store. They were just as eager to speak of their boss and the plant. One man said that his son had an accident and needed physical therapy three days a week. The father was given three hours off to take his son for therapy, and he was paid his regular wage for the time he took his son for therapy.
I went for a walk with a union organizer and a farm owner. After a time, I said, “You both get along well. Are you always this friendly?” One said, “We never let our work get in the way of our friendship.” The other said, “If we did our wives would divorce us both. They are best friends.”
We know that negotiations between employers and employees can be messy, but listening, dialogue and discernment is not only possible, it is essential to peace and joy. May we all be willing to accompany each other in honoring laborers whatever the labor may be.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
