Justicia para los Inmigrantes
Estuve presente en Washington, DC para participar en un día de lobby patrocinado por la Asociación Americana de Abogados de Inmigración (AILA) en marzo de 2005. El día de lobby fue para apoyar el próximo anuncio del Proyecto de Ley Integral de Inmigración McCain/Kennedy. Estuve allí para representar a hijos ciudadanos estadounidenses de padres indocumentados. Me reuniría con senadores y representantes de los estados de Kansas, Missouri y Nebraska. Durante el Lobby Day, la USCCB anunció el inicio de la Campaña de Justicia para los Inmigrantes para:
Educar al público, especialmente a la comunidad católica, sobre las enseñanzas de la Iglesia sobre la migración; Crear voluntad política para una reforma migratoria justa y humana; Abogar por reformas en las leyes y políticas relacionadas con la migración que reflejen los principios enunciados en las enseñanzas de la Iglesia.
Hace poco conocí a Tony Cube, el actual director de la Campaña de Justicia para los Inmigrantes. Dentro de dos semanas, la Iglesia celebra la 109ª JORNADA MUNDIAL DEL MIGRANTE Y DEL REFUGIADO. Rezo por el éxito de la Campaña de Justicia para los Inmigrantes, pero me doy cuenta de que espero más que justicia para los inmigrantes. Quiero más que soluciones políticas.
No puedo olvidar a un trabajador agrícola migrante que me dijo que si bien quería justicia, ayuda con la inmigración, salarios más altos y mejor atención médica, lo que quería de la Iglesia era atención pastoral y acceso a los sacramentos. Ella dijo: “No necesitamos que usted sea nuestro abogado, trabajador social o médico. Necesitamos que sea nuestro sacerdote”.
Quiero más que justicia, dignidad y atención a los pobres. Quiero que la Iglesia ame a los pobres.

Justice for Immigrants
I was present in Washington, DC to participate in an lobby day sponsored the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) in March, 2005. The lobby day was to support the coming announcement of the McCain/Kennedy Comprehensive Immigration Bill. I was there to represent U.S. citizen children of undocumented parents. I was to meet Senators and Representatives from the states of Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. During the Lobby Day, the USCCB announced the initiation of the Justice for Immigrants Campaign to:
Educate the public, especially the Catholic community, about Church teaching on migration; Create political will for just and humane immigration reform; Advocate for reforms in migration-related laws and policies that reflect the principles enunciated in Church teaching.
I recently met Tony Cube, the present Director for the Justice for Immigrants Campaign. In two weeks, the Church celebrates the 109th WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES. I pray for the success of the Justice for Immigrants Campaign, but I realize that I hope for more than justice for immigrants. I want more than political solutions.
I cannot forget a migrant farmworker telling me that while she wanted justice, help with immigration, higher wages and better health care, what she wanted from the Church was pastoral care and access to the sacraments. She said, “We don’t need you to be our lawyer, social worker or doctor. We need you to be our priest.”
I want more than justice, dignity and care for the poor. I want the Church to love the poor.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
