Es la gente
Mientras visitaba el pueblo de Goodland, Kansas, pasé un día en la feria del condado. Me propuse preguntarle a la gente en la feria: “¿Qué es lo ‘bueno’ de Goodland?”. Fue un buen rompehielos y le dio a la gente la oportunidad de mostrar orgullo por su comunidad. Una respuesta frecuente fue: “Es la gente”. La gente habló de amabilidad, de ayudar a los vecinos cuando pasaban por momentos difíciles, de orgullo por la juventud, de orgullo por las escuelas y, obviamente, en la feria del condado hubo una buena muestra de la comunidad 4-H.
Fue interesante conocer la participación de la comunidad hispana en Goodland. El trabajo agrícola en la zona involucra ganadería, y la producción de granos. La participación hispana en la agricultura es menos obvia que en muchas comunidades rurales, pero hay una presencia creciente de trabajadores hispanos en la construcción, irrigación y muchas industrias de servicios. Varias personas hablaron de trabajar en el campo anteriormente, pero de encontrar un empleo estable en el comercio y los servicios. Muchos trabajan en la agricultura en momentos en que la comunidad agrícola necesita trabajadores.
Cuando se habla de lo que es “bueno” en la comunidad, la gente se muestra optimista, constructiva y generosa. Hablan de sus vecinos con respeto. En la feria del condado, la gente generalmente celebra su esperanza y amor por su comunidad.
Cuando me fui de Goodland, estaba feliz de que mis visitas a la gente se mantuvieran positivas y llenas de esperanza. Las personas necesitan ser respetadas para obtener lo mejor de ellos. Realmente puedo decir que solo escuché sobre lo “bueno” en Goodland. El sheriff me agradeció por preguntar sobre lo “bueno” de la comunidad. Si bien tiene que tratar con personas que no siempre son una influencia positiva en la comunidad, se mostró optimista sobre la salud general de la comunidad. Le dije que el ministerio está destinado a ayudar a las personas a ser las mejores versiones de sí mismas que puedan ser. El estaba de acuerdo.

It’s the people
As I visited the town of Goodland, Kansas, I spent a day at the county fair. I made a point of asking people at the fair, “What is “good” about Goodland?” It was a good ice breaker, and it gave the people a chance to show pride in their community. A frequent response was, “It’s the people.” People spoke of friendliness, helping neighbors when they had hard times, pride in the youth, pride in the schools, and obviously at the county fair there was a good showing of the 4-H community.
It was interesting getting to know about the involvement of the Hispanic community in Goodland. The agricultural work in the area involves livestock and grain production. The Hispanic participation in agriculture is less obvious than in many rural communities, but there is a growing presence of Hispanic workers in construction, irrigation, and many service industries. Several people spoke of working in the fields previously, but finding steady employment in trades and services. Many do work in agriculture at times when the farming community needs laborers.
When speaking about what is “good” in the community, people are hopeful, constructive and generous. They speak of their neighbors with respect. At the county fair, people are generally celebrating their hope and love for their community.
When I left Goodland, I was happy that my visits with people stayed positive and hopeful. People need to be respected in order to get the best from them. I can truly say, I only heard about the “good” in Goodland. The sheriff thanked me for asking about the “good” in the community. While he has to deal with people who are not always a positive influence on the community, he was optimistic about the general health of the community. I told him that ministry is meant to help people be the best versions of themselves that they can be. He agreed.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
