Es bueno finalmente poder ofrecer reflexiones sobre nuestra Iniciativa Redentorista en el Ministerio de Migración después de pasar dos semanas lejos de mi computadora. Primero, quiero dar la bienvenida a los lectores a los blogs de Padre Migrante. Estoy agradecido con aquellos que han escrito por correo electrónico o en la página de Facebook de Padre Migrante durante las últimas dos semanas.
Personalmente, fue bueno estar lejos de la computadora durante dos semanas. Escribir blogs todos los días durante los últimos veinte meses ha sido un trabajo de amor, pero fue bueno tener un descanso. Padre Leonardo y yo hicimos un viaje bastante intenso a la frontera entre los Estados Unidos y México. Pensé que podía escribir blogs en mi teléfono, pero era un poco más difícil que estar sentado frente a una computadora. Después de luchar con el formato y perder accidentalmente lo que pensé que había guardado, me di por vencido. Es bueno que lo hice. No hubo tiempo para dedicarlo a preparar adecuadamente los blogs, y nuestra tarea de estudiar la migración nos está desafiando mucho a reconocer cuánto necesitamos aprender.
Nuestro viaje fue el primero de varios que planeamos entre junio y agosto. Mientras hacemos nuestra visita formal a los ministerios fronterizos para migrantes, estamos reuniendo información para nuestras Provincias. Dado que este fue el primer viaje de varios viajes planificados, es demasiado pronto para hacer declaraciones concluyentes sobre lo que estamos viviendo. Además, por respeto a la privacidad de los migrantes y los ministros de migración, decidí que en este momento no es apropiado presentar fotos de qué y a quién estamos viendo hasta que hayamos completado nuestro estudio.
Cuánto hay que aprender sobre la migración
Hace un mes escribí: “Qué poco conozco sobre migración”. Después de escuchar a cinco personas contar sus historias de migración, me conmovió dar cuenta de que después de trabajar treinta años dedicados a caminar con los migrantes, todavía tenía mucho que aprender sobre la migración. Después de dos semanas visitando “casas migrantes” en la frontera, quiero aclarar algo de lo que estoy aprendiendo. Cada migrante tiene una historia única. Es comprensible que mucha gente emita juicios sobre los migrantes en general, pero dichos juicios carecen de una apreciación suficiente de la complejidad de la migración.
Al hablar con los migrantes, una de las partes más motivadoras de su historia es la fe y la esperanza de que tendrán una vida que haga que las dificultades del viaje valgan la pena. Creo que no es la desesperación lo que mueve a una persona a emigrar, sino la esperanza lo que mueve a una persona a jugarse la vida persiguiendo su sueño de una vida mejor.

It is good to finally be able to offer reflections on our Redemptorist Initiative in Migration Ministry after spending two weeks away from my computer. First, I want to welcome back readers to the Padre Migrante blogs. I am grateful to those who have written either by email or on the Padre Migrante Facebook page over the past two weeks.
Personally, it was good to be away from the computer for two weeks. Writing blogs every day for the past twenty months has been a work of love, but it was good to have a break. Fr. Leonardo and I took a pretty intense trip to the U.S. – Mexico border. I thought that I could write blogs on my phone, but it was a quite a bit more difficult than sitting at a computer. After struggling with the format and accidentally losing what I thought that I had saved properly, I gave up. It is good that I did. There was not time to devote to properly prepare blogs, and our task of studying migration is challenging us greatly to recognize how much we need to learn.
Our trip was the first of several that we plan to have from June to August. As we make our formal visitation of border ministries for migrants, we are gathering information for our Provinces. Since this was the first trip of several planned trips, it is too early to make conclusive statements about what we are experiencing. Also, out of respect for the privacy of migrants and migrant ministers, I decided that at this time, it is not appropriate to present photos of what and whom we are seeing until we have completed our study.
How much there is to learn about migration
A month ago, I wrote, “How little I know about migration.” After listening to five people tell their stories of migration, I was humbled to realize that after working thirty years dedicated to walking with migrants, I still had much to learn about migration. After two weeks, visiting “casas migrantes” on the border, I want to clarify some of what I am learning. Every single migrant has a unique story. It is understandable that many people make judgements about migrants in general, but such judgments lack sufficient appreciation of the complexity of migration.
When speaking with migrants, one of the most impelling parts of their story is the faith and hope that they can and will have a life that that makes the difficulties of the journey worthwhile. I believe that it is not desperation that moves a person to emigrate, as much as it is hope that moves a person to risk one’s life following their dream for a better life.
Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
