Esperanzado

No camina solo.

Hopeful

“What do you think of the new Pope?” So many people are asking this question. As for me, HOPEFUL is the best answer to the question. In this jubilee year of Hope, it is good to have a common man, a common priest, a missionary as Pope. The greatest asset of Pope Leo is his life story, not his education, his administrative prowess or even his eloquence. I love that to all who knew him he was “Bob”, “Rob” or “Fr. Bob.” As news people scour previous statements about the issues of church and our times in order to categorize him, I look forward to listening to what he says today, and each day as the Holy Father. None of his previous statements or decisions determine how he shepherds his flock today.

When the disciple, Simon Peter responded to the question, “Who do you say that I am?” Jesus said, “You are Peter and, on this rock I will build my Church.” The past was simply his preparation. He does not walk alone. Pope Leo asked the Cardinals who elected him to walk with him in leading the faithful of the world. He gave his blessing to “all”, using the word for all “tutti” several times in his brief address from the balcony. He invited all people to synodality. May all people accept his invitation to walk together in Hope.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
