Una Iglesia “para los pobres”
En una audiencia ante representantes de los medios de comunicación el 16 de marzo de 2013, el Papa Francisco explicó su decisión de tomar el nombre Francisco. Dijo que durante su elección: “El Cardenal Claudio Hummes, un gran amigo, … Cuando la cosa se ponía un poco peligrosa, él me animaba. Y cuando los votos subieron a los dos tercios … él me abrazó, me besó, y me dijo: «¡No te olvides de los pobres!» Y esas palabras me llegaron: los pobres, los pobres. De inmediato, pensando en los pobres, pensé en Francisco de Asís. Después pensé en todas las guerras … Francisco también es el hombre de la paz. Y así, el nombre me llegó al corazón: Francisco de Asís. Para mí él es el hombre de la pobreza, el hombre de la paz, el hombre que ama y custodia la creación; en estos días no tenemos una relación muy agradable con la creación ¿verdad? Él es el hombre que nos da este espíritu de paz, el hombre pobre… ¡Ah, cómo quisiera una Iglesia pobre y para los pobres!”

Una Iglesia “pobre y para los pobres”. No es difícil comprender el respeto del Papa hacia los pobres. Unos meses más tarde, escribió: “La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe” (EG. 200). Fue ver la fe en las vidas de los inmigrantes lo que inspiró a mi escribir el libro La Fe del Migrante.
Lo que más me preocupa es cómo vamos a ser una Iglesia “para los pobres”. Si estamos “para los pobres”, debemos hacer más que proporcionar nutrición, atención sanitaria, asistencia legal y servicios sociales. Necesitamos responder mejor brindando atención espiritual y brindando acceso a los sacramentos. Nuestro primer paso debe reconocer humildemente nuestra falta de aprecio por las dificultades que los programas sacramentales imponen a los pobres.

In an address to representatives of the media on March 16, 2013, Pope Francis explained his decision to take the name Francis. He said that during his election, “Cardinal Claudio Hummes, a good friend … When things were looking dangerous, he encouraged me. And when the votes reached two thirds … gave me a hug and a kiss, and said: ‘Don’t forget the poor!’ And those words came to me: the poor, the poor. Then right away, thinking of the poor, I thought of Francis of Assisi. Then I thought of all the wars … Francis is also the man of peace. That is how the name came into my heart: Francis of Assisi. For me, he is the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation; these days we do not have a very good relationship with creation, do we? He is the man who gives us this spirit of peace, the poor man … How I would like a Church which is poor and for the poor!”

A Church that is “poor and for the poor”. It is not difficult to understand the Pope’s respect for those who are poor. A few months later, he wrote, “The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith” (EG. 200) It was seeing faith in the lives of migrants that inspired my writing of the book, Migrant Faith.
I am more concerned about how we are to be a Church “for the poor”. If we are “for the poor”, we need to do more than provide nutrition, health care, legal aid and social services. We need to respond better by providing spiritual care and providing access to the sacraments. Our first step needs to humbly recognize our lack of appreciation of the hardships that sacramental programs place on the poor.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
