Escuchando a Jesús

Listening to Jesus

It has only been eight days since Pope Leo XIV was elected Holy Father. Many commentators have expressed surprise at him being an American, a pastor, a missionary, an Augustinian, a Peruvian. The rapidity of his election by such a diverse conclave of Cardinals from all over the world, indicates that he quickly gained the support of his peers in the Conclave. At his first Sunday Mass as the Holy Father, he asked a question that was a focus of his prayer for the three days since his election. He asked listeners to consider: “When you think about your life, how do you explain where you have arrived?”

In the gospel of Good Shepherd Sunday, Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice”. Pope Leo spent two weeks with people of the Church, mourning the death of Pope Francis, celebrating his life and message, pondering with his fellow cardinals who would be the next successor to Peter. Many said of Pope Leo, he is a good listener. As he considered his own life journey, he considered Jesus’ words, “My sheep listen.”

As Pope Leo begins his papacy, commentators and people with particular agendas try to define him, and to prejudge his actions and teaching. Yet, I am excited to listen to how he explains his arrival as the one whom the Cardinals came to see as “the one”. More important is that each one of us consider our own lives and seek to “explain where we have arrived.” Hopefully, Jesus will say of us, “My sheep listen to my voice.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
